A couple of questions

Post by jonah66 »

Hi guys, I'd like to apply for a postman with driving job and have a couple of questions:
I need as close to full time hours as possible (ie around 38-40 per week). Is overtime always available to make this achievable from the 27-30 hours on the job descriptions?
I need to earn around £20k per year minimum (damn mortgage!), is this plausible?
Also, I've been reading some negative stuff on here about the job, especially for new starters. Is it as bad a job as some make out or is it a case of good and bad, like all jobs? I'll admit I'm a bit worried about my fitness levels, having read some posts here. I'm 53 although am fairly slim and active, but would need to increase my fitness without a doubt.
Any advice/tips/experiences would be gratefully received. Cheers :Very Happy

Overtime isn't always available.
Offices vary but you cannot be guaranteed the overtime.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's a suck it and see job some take to it straight away & some hate it & jack in within weeks, overtime may depend on how big your office is & how many in your office do overtime & how many give loops away, some of the part timer overtime monkeys in our office earn over 30k a year.

Cheers guys, I guess as you say it's a suck it and see thing. I spoke to a postie the other day who said he always gets OT but if it's not guaranteed it may be a bit of a risk.

I would suggest you to give it a try, every office is different.
Most of the people here are complaining about everything but I've found the job alright, there is always opportunity for the overtime and working your day off, I was sent to other offices and the situation there was different ( clueless managers and grumpy people, I wouldn't last a week there).
The less I made was 350£ and the most 500£ (/week).

You can give it a try you have nothing to lose, if you get the job stick to it for a couple of months and try to be calm don't take things personally. :Boo hoo! :cuppa :Boo hoo!

Definitely go for it - i joined 4 weeks ago and i am really enjoying it, especially being out of the office delivering. I joined on a 24 hour contract with the hope (and need) of doing more hours to pay the mortgage. First two weeks i did 24 hours, third week 43, last week 33, this week 33. Hoping to continue getting extra hours!!
I found this website before i joined and honestly, i nearly didn't turn up on my first day because of the negativity on here. Thankfully it hasn't been nowhere near as bad as a lot of people portray on here.

Good and long may it continue but you're 4 weeks in, you're opinion is valid but it's still based on 4 weeks.

If you need overtime to afford your living, do not apply

It's an absolutely stupid thing to do, overtime is there if the company needs it, if not you're screwed as it's never guaranteed
