scaremonging or do they want a strike?

Post by clashcityrocker »

A failure to procure the hour off in October would be another kick in the teeth of part time staff.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I agree, although the increase in the pay rate not happening is a kick in the teeth for both full & part-time if the 37 hour is not implemented in October or deferred.

From the manager briefing pack February/March 2018

From October 2019, a further one-hour reduction to the working week, subject to a joint evaluation of factors including ongoing efficiency, implementation of changes from trials in the operation and technological changes.

5. PART-TIME COLLEAGUES
An increase in hourly rate of pay in October 2018 and 2019 to reflect the shorter working week of full-time colleagues. This is in addition to the pay award for all eligible colleagues.
We will honour our agreements regarding part-time colleagues

I don't actually know any posties who are in favour or interested in the SWW except our Union rep who is in the callers office. Our DO goes against the average though in that we don't have any part time duties without the prep element of the job.
I think the implementation of the latest hour of SWW was based on Moya Greene's forecasted cost cutting plan including ' bench merging' which largely fell on it's sword. RM now want hours off the budget in return for the SWW. At some point there will not be any more time left to give back to RM & I would say we have gone past that point already.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

I already go at least 30 minutes a day over my time everyday so how does a SWW work for me, other than giving me another hour a week overtime. That does not make my week shorter.

No it doesn't, but it's a pay rise at least, like part timers will get. Except you won't get it on annual leave.

I can only speak for delivery and your experience may be different but the efficiency/productivity savings have to come from the full time staff.
It is hard to be unproductive on a 5 hour day.
The inefficiencies are largely in the indoor operation of a DO.

Not getting the SWW makes no difference to a full timer's take home pay.
(And many don't want it because they don't want to be more efficient.)
A failure to implement the next phase of the SWW will effect the take home pay of all those staff on LTFT hours.
We are being made to pay for other people's inefficiency.

The bit at the end about honouring our agreements to our LTFT staff is a bit of a laugh really.
Unless they are going to give the part time staff a pay rise regardless of the SWW?

I can't understand why some posties don't want a 35 hour week.

Some fear they will have too much work for their allotted hours and will not be able to avoid confrontation with managers.
Some because they live for the job and any time away from the DO is wasted time. For them a 38 hour week was 2 steps too far.

I think to be fair the lack of progress on efficiency/productivity is a management failing, not something that should be blamed on all full-time staff.

An inability to move from a 1970s hugely inefficient fire fighting style of management and an unwillingness to surrender control to a structured ( efficient ) work plan would be the two biggest reasons in my experience coupled with rank cowardice when faced with confronting the lazy "personalities" every DO has.

You can make your week shorter by doing the right thing and cutting off when it's time to do so.
