scaremonging or do they want a strike?

Post by Seymour Buts »

This is so obviously nonsense. I can assure you it's bollox, they're literally asking people to cancel leave in my office currently to get numbers up. How do you just get rid of somebody anybody? Unless you're on trial it's illegal. I could honestly say if VR was offered in my office they'd be any number smashing the gaffers door off its hinges to accept.

he had us in the middle of the floor today, and I can ASSURE people its is correct. he gave some bigshot gaffers name (Turvey or somebody?) who has took it on himself to start all this crap as he has been looking at the PDA actuals for the last few months and decided its to be nationwide. he told us at first it was the northern area but the reps say its everybody. anyways DOM says it won't be by next Friday as its too short of time. anyways the union has disagreed so as far as I can see its going nowhere. the DOM at a nearby office rang one of the reps today to ask how it was going at our office, the rep said 'not good, why?'' the DOM said cos he's just had the phone call to do exactly the same.

Can't see the union being able to block it, if it's just each DO having 40hrs removed from their budget, how's it any different from lapsing? It's just going to in effect be the permanent lapsing of a walk

i cant see how? We've only got 5 members of full time staff now and we regularly have around 10-15 of our pt staff working their day off so the rota works.
IF they do go through with it i really hope everyone decides to take their rest day and just let it crumble.
IF they get rid of one our full timers then a pt is going to need to come in to cover off sorting, We already have 3 part staff coming in on ot for this very reason and another 3 to help throw the rounds out for the other part times that arrive later.

We had our area union rep in Thursday, we are South Central. Sounds all very familiar from the talk we had. I'm on hybrid so I missed it, however, from my union rep it was basically that RM are not going ahead with the 37hr working week agreement as it can't be done unless they can loose the hours, hence the sudden PDA actuals data push to try and loose rounds in offices. Union will be balloting for national strike action if RM don't meet the agreed 37hr working week.
We have been told to work to rule, come in on our start time, take our 40 mins, no running, use your trolley don't carry bags unless light, work out the back of the van, knock neighbors, follow correct procedures for parcel deliveries and follow procedures for cutting off or booking overtime etc ie just do your job properly.
Instead of holding only 3 weeks of data from PDA actuals, RM are now using the last 13 months of data in order to build cases on an office by office basis. Anyone running their round will soon enough have half a delivery put on them so just DONT DO IT!!!
Senior management are coming for every hour spare in every office. Just do your job to the letter, work smart, don't make the job twice as hard as it needs to be just because you want to get home before your time, there's no prizes for being a super-postie, you'll just contribute to loosing hours and potentially job losses or zero replacements, no job and finish anymore, or not for much longer it's just gonna be extra work for all you runners.

I dont think its legal to tell workers to work to rule it could get your rep into trouble, how ever if each worker decides to do the job as set out by their employer then that is fine. The 37 hour week was linked to savings that never happened so it might be we will get it if we make the cuts they want but i am not sure how less people can do more work in less time unless of course they have the PDA data to back that up and we all know the data does not take into account early start no break posties.

Doing the job as RM proscribes could be seen as 'working to rule' and both systems may be the same but you must never refer to what you are doing as 'working to rule' . I'm not sure it is illegal but it may fall foul of anti-union or anti-strike legislation. There have not been any reductions in the amount of work we do so to my mind the SWW should never have been introduced. I think the workforce should have been asked if we wanted the SWW and the likely answer would have been no!

As far as I see it, the union are pissed that the technology required in order to save time on duties has not been implemented quick enough and using the PDA actuals to cut hours and potentially jobs was not part of the plan. I can see both sides but the union are correct in saying work to rule so these cuts aren't able to take place if we can use the PDA actuals to back up the workload we have. By running and not working as RM prescribe is playing into their hands.
Recently I emailed way up the chain with some PDA improvement ideas with regards their databases, data entry and our delivery methods. The responce I got back was positive and that they will be updating the PDAs with improvements to gps, walk logging, hazards etc. Apparently only 54% of logins are accessed via the specified walk barcode, this will become mandatory in order to fully utilize the PDAs, in fact login at all (I wonder if this has an impact on current PDA actuals if you use made up walk codes ie 1234567890. May not register your actuals)
I expect being able to access this data (hazard logging, safe place etc) when in the field would potentially save time if not out on walks then managers time and therefore cuts to management also.
The issue is that the data they have is mostly false data as the methods used by a good few posties is not the methods prescribed by RM. The only true improvements that RM can make whilst keeping the workforce healthy and not overworked is via technological development which is why the union are asking people to work the way your paid to work.
If everyone does this, there wont be any losses, potentially a shuffle of workload through offices to even things up, potentially new jobs if offices are stretched and a vast improvement in technology which would give people their SWW.

So why no updates from the CWU about this?

The old working to rule(doing the job properly)only when it suits fiasco!god what a monster we’ve created, with everyone in every office across the country divided on how they see things, the point blank selfish ones and the couldn’t give a toss ones, who couldn’t stick together if there lives depended on it,some finish early so we all must finish early? No! They mess up and get away with it so we all get away with it?No!,fun times ahead my friends, enjoy

as for them reneging on the 37 hour week. the rep reckons its already been funded. we were supposedly going to get 3% on the last part of the last pay deal but we got 2%, the other 1% paid for the hour off. so if they renege on it then there will be I/A.
