Do you get told to take the lapsing out? If not then more fool you! Why do you think the union would step in and do the managers job?

Bob works at Tesco stacking beans from 10 until 12.By 11;30 hes finished his pallet. Sue also works the same hours as Bob doing the same job and at 11;30 she has also completed, but there's one pallet left. Sue moves on to the next pallet because there's half an hour until hers and Bobs finish time but Bob buggers off home as hes done 'his' pallet, whos in the wrong here?

Let’s change it, Bob works quickly and completes his pallet but sue goes really slow, goes out for cigarette breaks and talks to people all day. Bob then gets asked to do sues work for her

Bob's items he's been stacking on the shelves are all over the place, some on the wrong shelf, some broken on the floor, plastic wrapping everywhere. A customer has just tripped over it and is now putting a complaint in. Sue's shelves are very neat and tidy, everything in the right place, she's tidied up all the plastic wrapping and yes, she has been for her statutory break. Bob didn't bother.
Now, who's the best employee? And should anyone be allowed to go home early?

Due to the fact that not enough goods are on the shelves and other shelves are a mess, customers end up going to better run stores.

Strictly speaking, the manager should be asking them to take it out and if they unreasonably refuse and go home early disciplinary action should be taken. The problem with this is it causes upset and workers start “going slow”, working up to their time, leaving lapsing and cutting off which causes a massive headache for management. So they’d rather keep them sweet and let them go home early, that way the office gets cleared. I would just leave it and go home unless you’re asked to take it out.

There's going to come a point where RM will bring in an official work standard/rate for outdoor work, probably something that they can use PDA actuals to automatically monitor

there's too many variants to standardise outdoor work. 20/30 year old posties are going to be much quicker than 50/60 year old posties. some are as fit as fleas some struggle with back/knee/musculoskeletal/etc. some duties have lots of steps/hills/gradients giving rise to fatigue and going slow, some are flat terrain where posties have no problems. if it comes to standardising against older and less physically able posties then they'll have to pay half the workforce off.

I worked in a factory many years ago not long after leaving school. It was 8 til 4 and you worked to a quota. Most days some of us could knock the quota out by 12 noon which was great, not so great was we wasn't allowed to clock out and go home til 4.

Exactly how I’ve always seen it and this is royal mails problem .We all work at different speeds and workload differs daily , it can’t be compared to a factory job where you clock in and out everyday at the same time.If that where to happen I would have to speed up a lot some days and work like a snail other days .
