stopping early finishes
When I come in at the proper start time there are posties outside all up to date chatting and when I reach my bench we are called up for IPS after pressure from the EARLY STARTING runners to the DOM. The runners and docket kings don't do IPS sorting they seem to get the job of throwing off the 25 hour workers frames but also keeping their own up to date as well. When I come off IPS having not thrown a letter or D2D's off in my frame the runners are bagging up and get out 90 minutes before me and the DOM has the gall for calling me slow

So you're saying that RM have got it wrong and this move towards measuring every minute we work is actually going to cost them big time?Celgar wrote:RM can't and don't see Postie's coming in early in upper management which is where all the decisions are made.
The thing is unlike other parts of the business the upper management in delivery have been in the game for a long time, people like McCauley have climbed the greasy pole from the bottom and they're well aware of the practices in a delivery office.
If that's the case why would they invest all this money in AHDC and PDA technology just to scupper their own lapsing opportunities?Royal Mail don't see early finishes as costing them money - they see it as an opportunity of saving money by lapsing duties
Makes no sense unless they believe they can make real cost savings so put 2 and 2 together for me and explain how stopping early starters will produce real cost savings.
If you think AHDC would be a "good thing" why would RM think it would be a "good thing", enough of a good thing to spend umpteen million quid on.....

I can't get my head round why anyone would think something that royal mail are pushing for and willing to spend millions on would ever be good for the minions at the bottom. The union have said it's all about measuring what work is performed during your day(outside only they way it's going) but still people focus on "runners" , the chances are if they get what they want you'll be expected to be a "runner" while out on delivery or they'll produce a page of facts and figures with timings for loops and attendance call numbers telling you why you are "below standard" and how you need to get upto the agreed speed or you will be given coaching no doubt ending with being coached out the job if you dont match the times the data says it should take to deliver the loops.
People can say if you do the job properly PDA actuals are nothing to fear but in the end they will be the biggest bullying weapon in a doms armour if royal mail get what they want

I don't know maybe you should email Rico as he mentions about introducing AHDC in the courier.Woody Guthrie wrote:So you're saying that RM have got it wrong and this move towards measuring every minute we work is actually going to cost them big time?Celgar wrote:RM can't and don't see Postie's coming in early in upper management which is where all the decisions are made.

It's obvious that Royal Mail will use the PDAs for their own advantage, for slower posties not up to the required speed - whatever speed that is, but they also intend to use it to resource to workload. If staff are finishing early then they will use it to lapse duties and in our office the main culprits finishing early are the ones that are starting early. They spoil it for everyone else.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

stopping early finishes
well since I first posted this a fortnight ago, its had the desired/undesired effect. everyone...and I mean EVERYONE coming in is starting on their official start time. some come in early to have a cuppa or read the paper etc but they aren't starting till their official duty time. this last week has seen even the quickest slowing down, and getting back more or less on their time. the first few days saw a few stopping back till their finish time or having to come in the next day early to pay back the time they had gained. so they've got the message. but its backfired on the gaffers, a few who work overtime have stopped because they weren't starting their overtime till their official duty time ended, meaning they were out even later. so, as a result (what a surprise) the managers have said ''look, we are NOT stopping ghost overtime''. but the union reps have jumped straight on that, stating its totally defeating the objective and grossly unfair to pay someone overtime (runners) when they are finishing within duty time, and on the other hand keeping someone back till their finish time or make them come in early next day just because they dont want/or cant do overtime. so that's put a spanner in their works. we'll see how long it lasts!!. I will update you all when the gaffers intestines drop out their arse.

My duty is a long duty, most days over my time, I'm not that bothered as working over my time adds up and gets me a few extra hours a week, because of the length of my duty I don't need to do lapsing, a while back on a Tuesday it was extremely quiet so I took a bit of lapsing but made it back to the office 15 mins before finishing time, the next day one of the managers comes round to tell me What bit of lapsing I've to take, I reminded him the length of my duty and lapsing wouldn't be possible, he then tells me he seen me back 15mins early on Tuesday so should be able to laps other days, when I reminded him I'm normally between 30/60 mins over my time but I don't ask him to take loops off me he said just watch as pda actualls will show my true finishing times, I've no issue with this but if they going to pull me for being 15 mins early once in a blue moon I will just cut off at my finishing time every day, needless to say I've not been pestered to do lapsing since.

Any contingent of posties that comes together and decides to start doing the job as RM proscribes will arrive at the conclusion that the job no longer matches the duty time. We as an office did it for as week and at the very least it proved that the forty hours the finance director wanted out of our office budget were not available to be extracted. I would have liked to have seen us carrying on working as RM directs but it is almost impossible to get many posties to do it. Afterwards the finance director accused us of 'working to rule' but this was not the case.daveyeff wrote:well since I first posted this a fortnight ago, its had the desired/undesired effect. everyone...and I mean EVERYONE coming in is starting on their official start time. some come in early to have a cuppa or read the paper etc but they aren't starting till their official duty time. this last week has seen even the quickest slowing down, and getting back more or less on their time. the first few days saw a few stopping back till their finish time or having to come in the next day early to pay back the time they had gained. so they've got the message. but its backfired on the gaffers, a few who work overtime have stopped because they weren't starting their overtime till their official duty time ended, meaning they were out even later. so, as a result (what a surprise) the managers have said ''look, we are NOT stopping ghost overtime''. but the union reps have jumped straight on that, stating its totally defeating the objective and grossly unfair to pay someone overtime (runners) when they are finishing within duty time, and on the other hand keeping someone back till their finish time or make them come in early next day just because they dont want/or cant do overtime. so that's put a spanner in their works. we'll see how long it lasts!!. Our DOM showed me my PDA actuals data and referenced the PDA data for our office as a whole after I pointed out where RM is heading regarding enforcement of all paid hours being worked. It shows that our office is working all our paid hours bar 3% although I would say all the information isn't there & RM owe us money instead. The higher up management again supposedly realise we are doing the job as directed or they cannot reduce our budget. How long that lasts I wouldn't like to say.
Rico Black may have mentioned AHDC in the courier but comments regarding the trials of AHDC resulting in increased wage costs and that the technology cannot keep posties data separate from each other mean the AHDC is dead. Therefore RM wish to continue working off incorrect data and use PDA data to justify more cuts that in a lot of cases are not required and are unjustified.
