The Union know this and so have to be wise when agreeing with RM on their proposals and vice versa. Parcel deliveries on the other hand will go to 7 days on a rota basis. The Union must insist on a 35 hour week to keep EVR's to a minimum but with significant savings for shareholder greed. If they both parties take this route then disruption would be kept to a minimum and any other way would be a battle.
And if your in a non LAT (no parcels any day of the week) hub, what exactly are you going to deliver on sat/sun?

We now live in a 24/7 society and dropping tuesdays, wednesdays or whatever in the week is much more acceptable than a saturday when there is a better chance of capturing the homeowner in. Why not have a real conversation about 2 days off in the week with saturdays and sundays in? lets see who's in favour of that, no body i'd guess and i'm with them. Honestly, mon-fri suits posties, not the customer.
Until very recently I would have agreed with you that if they went for a five day operation it would the Tuesday that would go. Since it has been leaked from the union I feel it probably is being pursued by RM give that all they ever go on about is cost cutting. It will save them a load of money with all the five day cover duties going, cancellation of the RRIS payment which is £1800 off posties annual wage, and other costings such as heating, lighting, vehicle costs etc. It's sort of a no-brainer to be honest for RM bosses with tunnel vision.
Sorry to sound stupid but What is RRIS payment?

I don't know if every postie gets it in every part of the UK and I think maybe the amount differs. Before any stoppages on my pay slip the RRIS adds up to a bit over £1800 per annum. It is paid, as far as I know, due to RM having difficulty recruiting or replacing staff. Most people don't want to work on Saturdays hence the phrase "Have a nice weekend postie!" that we hear all the time.

RM won't want to pay out redundancy to thousands of people because they just can't afford it.

I think what they want to do is remove anything that won't fit through a letter box from delivery.
Currently only about 10% of the letters and flats in my DO go through the IPS. It is all sequenced or in the case of the flats, currently in buddy trays.
It isn't too much of a stretch to see them coming back with bench merging as an option.
Very little indoor work - so either a massive outdoor span or no more full time employment. Even at 35 hours/week.
It's probably only DOs where the MC has got T2K machines that get buddy trays. tbqf I can see RM getting rid of all the T2K machines, there doesn't seem to be the workload to justify having them. RM are probably going to at some point look into machines that can sequence flats and letters together

You're not delivering sat/sun or if not sat and they choose another day, only parcel drivers from lat hub will be working.

I was thinking when all this comes in I presume that non drivers will not have to work the afternoon shift or if letters become Mon -Fri they will get the whole weekend off.

Surely this is most unfair as some of the most skilled employees ( drivers) would potentially get the worst shifts .ie afternoons and weekends,or even possibly transferred to a Lat depot also.

Also will there be a manager in to manage the delivery ( or not as the case will probably be if they are planning on basing delivery of 18 an hour ) of the parcels. I doubt it.

First of all driving isn't a skill unless you're a professional driver.

Secondly we're an LAT office and the guys are already fighting each other to get off delivery and onto a backshift of delivering parcels. Nobody fancies the idea of another 40% on a P&L pair or even 20% on a rural, we're likely to be oversubscribed with volunteers if they start collapsing walks....and the non drivers won't obviously get any choice in that.

Hmmm..An interesting thread.

If the USO was ever to go, expect letter delivery to go like TNT (Whistl) over 3 x days a week (Mon-Wed-Fri) part-time.

You could have the opportunity to work extra hours (up to full-time) at a local LAT unit which will be delivering parcels over the 7 x days, say from 7am-7pm.

I guess most who would want full-time work anyway, you could do both types of work, i.e. staggered, one day delivery work, followed by parcel delivery work the next day.

This could be operated on a rolling rota.

Could help a lot staff suffering with wear & tear issues.

Dropping any day Mon-Fri doesn't suit any businesses though, whereas dropping a Saturday probably would suit because not all of them are open.

Personally I think if the RM is to scrub any day at least for standard mail delivery, it will be Saturday with perhaps only parcels/premium letters going out.
