For one thing the vast majority of RM mail centres wouldn't have any yard Marshalls as such. As to the qualification mine was done by the area RM health and safety officer. An afternoons course and a short multiple choice exam which if you pass gives you a certificate which is valid for 3 years.

I did mine as a Christmas casual this Christmas gone. Got no bonus pay but it did have overtime attached to it as the first lorry came in at 18:45 when normally I would start at 20:00.

A banksman is a higher qualification and I was told there are only a handful of them in the entire RM group.

A Yard marshall is someone responsible for H&S within the Yard, for assigning vehicles and their parking slots, for ensuring safe access to the yard for all vehicles, for ensuring safe movement of all vehicles within the yard, for the safe operation of the yard and vehicles including minor repairs such as wheel changes.

Basically, if anything goes wrong in the yard, the Yard marshall is the one under the microscope.

Navalron wrote:No you don't get paid for it. It's basically directing the vehicles into the bags and making sure the trailers are on the correct spot for cages ect. They are normally part time jobs in the MCs. Utter tosh. Wtf is the manager doing. Oh yes that's right, sitting in the traffic office drinking coffee and watching porn on the computer. :thumbup
Didn't RM get fined last year for a yard marshall being crushed by a vehicle, in possibly a London office.
Usual RM nothing gets done till someone gets seriously hurt. The words stable-door , horse ,bolted ,spring to mind

Yes everything that I was responsible for when a MGV driver. It's utter nonsense. It's just another layer of bullshit.

Easier said than done.
It is a bit like your first true love. A part of you will always love her no matter how badly she hurt you.
And if she said she wanted you back, you know you would be there in a flash.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Sounds like a job for a CWU health & safety rep??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
