Even if some smaller ones close then the customers in those areas will have to travel miles got their parcel and what do their p739’s say ?.
A very interesting question I hadn't thought of asking.
The LAT hub network has already been set up and one servicing our DO is at another much larger DO about six miles away that also can sort sequenced letters. I don't think each hub will cover ten DOs but it could be about five. If the plan goes ahead they could be overwhelmed with work.
Your question is difficult to answer but I guess RM have thought of an answer. Currently if the posties delivering the LAT parcels cannot deliver the items, or cannot locate the address which has been another problem, then the items go back to the DO covering that location for ordinary delivery the following day. With RMs plan to move all large parcels & all Tracked items to LAT hubs that cannot happen. They will be delivering probably after the post office network has closed as well so they could not be left there like the 'local collect' items. If they could leave them at post offices that might not be suitable for every recipient who might be elderly, handicapped, or unable/unwilling to collect their stuff from a post office.

It’s just a thought I had about how the whole lat hubs will work regarding delivery or non delivery.

Even if it’s 5 offices they cover and you had at least one parcel for each office that you couldn’t deliver , that’s a lot of time and distance to take up and travel so where’s the real time being saved ?

All in all , I’m not sure they’ll save the time they think they will and dropping 1/6 is probably too many deliveries for it to work.

We need to see the full plans for this because this is nowhere near enough info.

Rico Black is like a needle stuck in a groove on a vinyl record. All he can see is cost cutting meanwhile none of the many issues are being looked at. According to yesterday's announcement a load more money is being pumped into an insurance to back up the old senior executives RM pension scheme. Meanwhile our personal pension contributions continue to be siphoned into the lump sum arrangement rather than into an actual pension scheme.

They are going to divert ALL the tracked items which closes the time gap a little more but it won't be enough so we will still have too much work to fit into duty time. Thinking about it further taking the 'future' work away from regular postal deliveries leaves us with the small parcels, admittedly the section growing the most, but also the letters & flats which are predicted to eventually decline to very little work. So this plan really kills our jobs in the future and changes RM into another parcel courier rather than a national service. I wonder if Ofcom will have an opinion on this or not.

Can't see it being all Tracked no matter what size. Would LAT hubs be able to handle 4-5k of Tracked each (probably at least double that in the run up to Xmas)?

Remember Royal Mail’s announcement yesterday included that they intend to increase productivity by 15 percent in the next 5 years.

This equates in hours to a reduction of 20 thousand full time equivalents.

A very significant target.

increased efficiency doesn't equate as jobs. Internet retail is booming - it's literally revolutionising entire sectors, postal is declining, everything is contingent on the business being flexible and not pretending it's the 1950s.

If RM can't deliver parcels and packages more cost-effectively than one bloke delivering in a dedicated van for Asos, then we really are in trouble.

It does when the CWU got told this on Tuesday. Royal Mail from 2009 to 2014 increased productivity by 15 percent and there was 22 thousand jobs taken out through CSS sequencing , BT 2010 revisions and mail centre closures.

On Weighted items per work hour which is the productivity which both Of Com and Royal Mail use to measure productivity. There is on a couple of ways you increase productivity, even grow work or reduce hours.

With letter decline than it is unlikely that we will increase productivity by growth especially with Royal Mail’s parcel separation plan.

im guessing this has to go to trial first?
if so i hope the union choose a semi rural area to try it in and not london/brum/manc,as what works in the city will not work as well in the rural areas.
It might even be like the new delivery methods trial and fall flat on its face yet.

The nearest LAT office to our D.O is 40 miles away. The IV postcode is massive in area. We still deliver the majority of Amazon's parcels in our office and I'd guess it's much the same throughout our area. These LAT folks are going to have to work hard for their money. Fun times ahead.

This sounds like massive overtime, earning opportunity for people. 7-7 7 days a week.

In south London, Amazon drivers and others are certainly working 12-hours on Sundays as norm. if you need to make money it's the best time; more people at home, less traffic.

I won't be at surprised if they trial it and it fails completely. Other than saving a lot of money and justifying the existence of the LAT hubs I don't see any point in this proposal.

Some of your troops could be earning in excess of 60k with these proposals.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

postie delivers the post in the morning, parcel man delivers parcel in afternoon, therefore going to the same address twice in one day, so a 2nd delivery?
