Thanks for the info Clash. :thumbup Well I know a couple of "Early Birds" that are not going to be Happy Teddies at that news. They consider the early Packet Prep as their own personal "Special Overtime", that's Overtime that you get paid Before everyone else starts (and you can throw of your duty at the same time) :no no . They have to get their Overtime in early because they always finish their Delivery an Hour Early. I must remember to let them know about this. :cuppa

ghosting overtime will be much easier for RM to crackdown on if they use the PDA tools properly. Whether they will or not who knows, but theyre now talking about using the PDA for data collection and to monitor efficiency more than they ever had before.

For night shifts in MCs sorting inward mail I'm guessing that all packets will go into sleeves no matter what size once it kicks in. What will happen to the large packets going to the same MC area as where they were posted, will they be sent off to the packet hubs?

Easy to find. Go to the 'stickies' section on the 'Blue Shirts' page. Second entry down should be 'Royal Mails game changing parcel strategy' or something like that. The OP is Martin Walsh. Read the initial post on there. If you are a relatively new postie you could be one of the 8000 to lose their jobs.
Cheer him up why don't you ? Ever thought of doing motivational speaking?
My apologies leolion. That wasn't a nice thing for me to say. I would think the CWU would fight this major change given that it involves thousands of job losses and a likely increases in amalgamation of DOs. If they capitulate and let it happen then I don't really know what to say. There are other issues to take into consideration such as the USO review. If large parcels are taken away then Ofcom will view many offices as being uneconomic. I don't know what happens then.

Which doesn't really make sense as the guys that were delivering those afternoon tracked items had to come from a DO miles away. I personally wouldn't be too affected by the removal of Large Packets as the vast majority of mine are shoe book and smaller. I can't see me making up much time as RM would like. :Boo hoo!

I thought it would revert to the system we used to use on bikes. We'd throw out the oversize parcels and they'd be delivered by a couple of the guys who wanted the OT. :hmmmm Unless we get the LAT duties I can see us using that system again. After all the OT rate is so crap it'll probably have no effect on RMs falling profits. :cuppa
Sadly you're misraken. You'll receive no oversized but still have 1 in 6 of yours jobs collapsed. Offices like yours are at risk of job losses. Union need to look at this very closely.

This later second parcel delivery is interesting. The delivery guy will be in the same area at the same time as the collection guy doing the last collection from Post Offices and businesses, who can see where this is going?

Yes I can see where you are taking us :evil/mad
To be honest I am really surprised all the box collections were not moved back to the walks in today's announcement. Maybe that would be breaking the USO or they didn't want to upset us too much.

It will take four years because the RM has an agreement with the CWU to not do forced redundancies or just get rid of staff without good reason. 8000 staff is a lot of people for them to wait to leave of their own accord. Not an easy task.
Any posties who thinks this will not affect them has not thought about it. Most DOMs didn't know about the changes until fairly recently. When I explained it to our DOM they immediately could see their job was under threat by it.
Just visualize for a moment the York's of mail arriving into your DO in the morning. How many of them contain large parcels and tracked items ? It could be up to or even over 50% of the York's of mail. That is half of your workload going elsewhere that you will never see again. In addition the wording in the announcement wasn't completely clear on whether SDs would be diverted to the LAT hubs as well.
As a direct result of all this mail being diverted to the LAT hubs most offices will be deemed to be uneconomic by both RM and/or Ofcom. This will lead to most DOs being amalgamated into nearby DOs or sites that can accommodate them. This will be an inconvenience for everyone - posties & 'customers' alike. It will also result in a lot of DOMs and managerial staff no longer being required which isn't good for them either.
Forget about the idea of this proposal being to assist customers to get parcels delivered faster - this is purely a MASSIVE cost cutting exercise to surpass all previous cost cutting.
On a separate note I wish everyone would stop refering to this proposal as the return of the second delivery. It is not a second delivery. At best it is an attempt to salvage the LAT hubs idea which fell on its face because there wasn't enough business to make it viable.

Thanks for your reply Celgar. In terms of your point above I was referring to the 2nd bullet point under the "Network Extension" section of yesterday's Colleague Update which refers to a "second daily delivery" (I did not mention any "return of" although I accept the OP did in the title of this thread).

Have they got any idea as to which post offices these lat hubs will be taking parcels that they can’t deliver? If they are covering such a big area it could be 10 different offices.

Even if some smaller ones close then the customers in those areas will have to travel miles got their parcel and what do their p739’s say ?.

A very interesting question I hadn't thought of asking.
The LAT hub network has already been set up and one servicing our DO is at another much larger DO about six miles away that also can sort sequenced letters. I don't think each hub will cover ten DOs but it could be about five. If the plan goes ahead they could be overwhelmed with work.
Your question is difficult to answer but I guess RM have thought of an answer. Currently if the posties delivering the LAT parcels cannot deliver the items, or cannot locate the address which has been another problem, then the items go back to the DO covering that location for ordinary delivery the following day. With RMs plan to move all large parcels & all Tracked items to LAT hubs that cannot happen. They will be delivering probably after the post office network has closed as well so they could not be left there like the 'local collect' items. If they could leave them at post offices that might not be suitable for every recipient who might be elderly, handicapped, or unable/unwilling to collect their stuff from a post office.
