CWU reaffirm opposition to second referendum

Post by Woody Guthrie »

Of course it's a moot point Tman because it's no longer anything to do with us.
Does it similarly fill you with ire when you think of how the US spunks its money on faceless bureaucracy or how its young are dying in the ghettos or how it expands its borders through proxy governments across the globe?

No? I didn't think so.

Why?
That horse has bolted, we've made our decision and apparently it's "undemocratic" and will lead to civil war if we change that decision so now it's time for the EU bashers to front up and come up with a coherent plan that goes a little beyond the let's leave on WTO terms crap.
postslippete wrote:There appears to be many MPs that seem hellbent on stopping Brexit by refusing to agree on anything. So at present we seem to be heading a little bit aimlessly towards a no-deal Brexit scenario.
The ERG are the biggest barrier to leaving the EU, they are not trying to stop Brexit they are trying to manipulate their own kind of Brexit. We aren't heading aimlessly anywhere, we are being driven towards a no-deal Brexit. If you've haven't worked that out yet you're not really paying attention.

I've worked out that you don't like the way things have progressed. In the last few years Mrs may tried to get a deal with the EU,she did that but parliament keep rejecting it...that's what I meant by heading aimlessly towards a no deal - because I think she really wanted a deal! Yes,I know she said no deal is better than a bad deal and you could imply whatever you want there...but I still believe she wanted some sort of agreement in parliament and as we all know that ain't going to happen.

The WTO terms may not be the best, but I do agree that we need to get away from all that EU bureaucracy.

It might not solve the Irish backstop nor short term disruption but we will save £39 billion and seek out new trade deals.
There are two problems with that theory.

1. The £39 billion is a legal obligation signed in 2013 and enforceable through the international courts. It isn't subject to us leaving with or without a deal.

2. Trying to negotiate trade deals with the very same countries after you've reneged on your financial obligations to those countries is not going to end well is it?
Actually it's not clearly set out that we have to pay anything if we have a no deal - though I'm sure the EU would go through the international court of justice. What's more important is that we are no longer a net contributor to the EU in terms of billions we pour in every year compare to other countries.

As for trading deals, again like I said,as a net importer,we import far more than we export from the EU so I guess .they need us as much as we need them.

Wacko74 you should try and watch the Dispatches : The Brexit Billionaires to help inform you. I know you dislike the practice of shortselling, Robin Crispin Odey of ODEY Asset Management features in the programming crowing about how much he made shorting the £ following the Brexit result and subsequently betting against companies growing. ODEY Asset Management currently hold a 1.0% short position against Royal Mail Group. Farage was a city trader, Rees Mogg helps run Somerset Wealth Management, John Redwood is a global strategist at Charles Stanley (he's the one who told investors to get their money out of the UK). James Dyson has relocated his HO to Singapore as they still have access to the EU, despite not wanting the UK to have a deal.

This is a very simplistic idea.
Yes we are a net importer with the EU but if we leave without a deal we won't be trying to negotiate with the EU, well be trying to negotiate with 27 individual nations some of which we run a deficit and some we don't but you have to understand that for all of these 27 countries their trade with the rest of the EU is worth far more than a deal with the UK would be.

Another factor is that our trade with the EU is worth around 15% of our economic value but the reciprocal trade is worth around 3-4% of the EU27.

Of course a great deal of our exports aren't even physical they are services and what will happen with financial services is anyone's guess, they could possibly be ring fenced into a separate deal to keep the city spivs happy which would drastically tip the trade deficit.

At the end of the day being a net importer is never that strong a position. If you can't come up with a deal shelves empty pretty quickly, prices go up and the natives get restless. Net exporters can always find new markets.

Dispatches...really?? Aren't they the programme that painted us in a very bad light years ago showing posties out on the streets working till 9pm,leaving letters and packets on the doorstep? I find that these programmes are very, very selective in what they show and it's well known that broadcasting corporations are pro-EU anyway. Did you quote channel 4?

Postslip No I did n't quote Ch. 4, the link is a youtube video of Robin Crispin Odey speaking himself.

Regarding Dispatches I didn't see the episode you are referring to, but you intimate it was criticising Royal Mail. And you refer to that as an incredible narrative, on a Royal Mail forum that largely criticises Royal Mail........

So where do you get your news/information from?

And the same could be said of those who voted to remain. Judging from the way this thread has progressed it seems clear to me that people are seldom going to change their views and it qualifies my point that a 2nd vote in one form or another is just going to be a complete waste of time. Stripping naked and glueing your bum to the gallery window in the House of Commons aint going to change anything either.

'We were then subjected to a barrage of negativity about the culture of the Royal Mail. Rude managers. Incompetent staff. People not knowing where they were going. Inadequate training. Lax security. Mishandled packages. Late mail. Bad industrial relations. Theft and laziness.' The Guardian

I am struggling to see how that is particularly controversial, what here do you disagree with? (theft aside)

Dispatches programs are made by different producers and different reporters. Not the same ones each episode. Just because you disagree with the opinions expressed on one episode doesn't mean that every program is inaccurate.

Europe is largely controlled by Germany & France and the French still have a chip on their shoulders. Germany would have preferred to give us a slightly better deal but there is so much hate still from the French. I would say most people in the UK are so angry about how they have treated us that a people's vote would result in a higher majority vote to leave the EU.

I couldn't agree more especially since watching "Brexit behind the scenes" from the European perspective, referring to the UK as a colony is not going to win any friends.
