I think some are missing the point :

PDA’s are going to be used along side a daily 30 minute flex which will inform you whether your finishing 30 mins later or early. PDA’s don’t take into account whether an individual started before their time , had their meal reliefs , did their indoor prep or whether the traffic was light. Remember the PDA results are an individual performance but will used across the office to reduce overtime , introduce seasonal variations, reduce part time hours and it is not factual.

No trade union should sign up to this as it is designed to take the union out of the workplace as negotiations are longer needed if you accept the PDA is always right. PDAs will also be used to set standards across an office as if it takes that individual that long why does it take another more time ?

They also want to introduce AHDC which will record all hourage and be linked to your pay.

Furthermore resource Scheduler which links all they systems including traffic Transformation which will than be able to produce a different set of walks for each office either weekly or monthly .

We criticise firms like Amazon for the way they treat their workforce .

Can you imagine if we allowed managers to be able to use this to to resource , they would simply reduce part timers hours if they if working above their contracted hours if some individuals within the unit was short on hours on their PDA.

Agreeing Real time recording is not the way forward for unions ! It is defeatism. We should always negotiate over revisions and resourcing taking into account local technology.

If you want real time recording to save you than be prepared for even a worse culture in the workplace and a worse employment model.

My office doesn’t do lapsing. Not done it for 18 months. Do you honestly think Rico is working for Royal mail. He’s just a name, he has lots of people below him who are running it.

The amount of people in my office that show complete disregard to warnings from the union about starting early, not taking the meal relief and going round the duty like their training for the Olympics is unreal. The new starts are the worse for it, even though they have been in long enough to be up to speed they are in trying to impress management 20/25 minutes before their shift starts. I realise the pda wont show this but its about time something was done about the posties who are bringing those of us who do the job properly down by undercutting us by starting early etc. sickens me. :evil/mad
Your spot on my friend! it ain’t rocket science, start at your start time finish at your finish time, and go home,it’s that easy honestly!

Think a few need to read what Martin has posted. 30 minutes flex on a day to day basis! And outdoor standards just like a few (myself included) have said they would use pdas to measure. I think anyone who thinks any of this would be good for us must be deluded. I honestly think that the ones in my office who love a cut off and beg for the use of PDA actuals will be the ones who cry the loudest when they get told they are too slow whereas the runners as they get called on here will slow down a bit and finish on time.

It is not going to be like that ! PDAs and real time recording is designed to introduce standards in how quick a task should take and they want to introduce the 30 minute flexibility.

In the industry we are and the variable workload per day and even in the different seasonal periods it is very unlikely that all work hours will be fully utilised for every second.

Additionally Royal Mail are alive to the fact that some people just start on time and ensure they finish at the right time. This is why they want to introduce standards via real time recording to ensure that even thou your working till time , whether your working at a decent standard.

So the big questions, if royal mail get there way and have standards for the outdoor delivery if you finish early but your data shows you are working above the standard will you still have extra work given to you?

Alternatively, if you can't complete but your data shows you are below the outdoor standard will it eventually lead to conduct and dismissal if you can't speed up?

All these sort of things need to be set in stone if all the people on here get their way and the cwu don't fight against the introduction of all this

It's certainly changed in my office where everybody is held until finishing time (3pm!) by management and made to collate D2Ds or clean the vans etc if they finish delivery before this time. We, too, used to bugger off home an hour or more early in the past, but no more. It just shows that if management have the will it can, and does, happen. We never thought it would change in our office either. Keep your fingers crossed.

You are very fortunate if your claim is true! Your DOM must be a right pushover and his bosses? well sleeping.
There has been a summer lapsing programme operating nationwide for years and for example a Tuesday is a nap lapsing day.
Do you have a special dispensation for YOUR office? Or is number one a bullet proof tyrant style to be feared dictator?
You may of course have an abundance of annual leave taken up by staff, but that won’t apply on many quieter days/weeks.
The last I heard Rico Back was the CEO of Royal Mail and very well paid for that function.
Rico Back would eventually be interested in your claim make no mistake about that, with shareholders to account too.
His underlings would be falling over themselves to inform him, while justifying their Jobs and when looking for cost saving suggestions as he would expect from them. It’s probably the number one, basic and very simple cost saving exercise, lapse or absorb work to save money in delivery. Staff at home 2 hours plus early !!, somebody will know and notice that, it’s manna from heaven for any accountants office junior auditor.

Martin, I do not suggest it will be a trouble free future for the CWU trying to established new working practices.
The 30 min flexibility part off, was it the way forward agreement?, was a total disaster for the DOMs to apply and it is/was generally speaking never applied because they could not fulfil its trouble free operation, truly a nightmare to deliver on.
The Union would surely not fall for such another loose ended trouble filled type of agreement again and how would a DO manager possibly administer such a complex system with so many variables on a daily basis. They can barely organise office manpower cover and OT payments in an orderly fashion. A “nightmare” description of these proposals you raise hardly begins to describe this shambolic unworkable system of best achieving all paid hours, it’s way too complicated for posties the Union and delivery unit DOMs to apply. Forget Amazons style of management for a moment! Their staff are starting from scratch with no base Union agreements unlike those be considered with any proposed changes RM may wish to implement.
If the Union rigidly adheres to the current start/finish time duration of a days work as a base line, nothing much can change. Never sacrifice the OPGs right to have a guaranteed finish time, there is still life to be lived out with RM. It is still only a job of work to allow people to earn a living, not a burden of servitude that RM would wish to inflict on delivery posties. If and when this proposal was ever put to the members it would be soundly rejected. Then what can/will they do???

I work with some one transferred from a different office and they used to finish before 1pm every day so found it bad here at first that we more ales work around to our finish time. Surely bringing this in is a bad incentive really as some days especially saturdays i admit to trying to get done a bit early as if i can get to an event by finishing at 1-1:30 instead of 2 on the day then surely its stupid to purposely finish late and ruin my own day. That been said quite often work over 15-30minutes on Wed/Thu but the thing is if they want you to work to exact hours its going to involve dropping some days and sat in the office/dragging heels not to come back too early on others, How does that benefit the company? Surely a little bit of give and take is just logical?

Who has to drag there heals to finish on time if your duty is right and you use delivery methods and take your breaks seat belt every time work from back of van turn wheels into kerb if there is one etc etc etc u would go way over your time,it would be hard to conduct someone if you had done everything correctly but as usual Royal Mail and Dom’s turn a blind eye until something happens then on you like a ton of bricks

Always find it amazing how much quicker posties are on a Tuesday/Saturday, just so they can finish 30 mins or so earlier. Yet they wonder why hours are getting taken out office and lapsing has become all year for most. Indoor prep most days takes over 1hr because packets, manual never finished for p-timers. Never an issue on a Saturday funnily enough.
I'm a big fan of working all paid hours. Maybe cause I get all the s**t duties lol

The reason most posties are finished early on Saturday is because they come in early for free for some reason
