Marlow postman embarks on 100k cycle through London in memory of son

A MARLOW postman is set to take on a daunting bike ride in honour of his son who sadly passed away at just 20 weeks old.

In order to raise money for a cuddle/cold cot at Stoke Mandeville Maternity Unit for stillborn babies, Andrew Smith will take on the London Night Ride 2019 on June 8.

Andrew is hoping that the money raised will be enough for Stoke Mandeville to buy a cuddle cot, which allows parents to have and be with their baby after its passing.

The journey will take Andrew on a 100km ride, starting from the Lee Valley VeloPark and taking in the sights across the capital, stretching from Fulham in West London all the way across to Stratford in East London.



Andrew is raising the money after his little boy Michal sadly passed away in September last year. Anna and Andrew said: “The team at Stoke Mandeville were incredible and we will forever be grateful to them for making the hardest time of our lives to date, one we can look back on with happy memories of our little ‘champ’.

“Even though we have an amazing support network of family and friends, when you come home you feel very alone. To help us come to terms with our loss and to help keep little Michał’s memory alive we have decided to set up a Justgiving page to raise money and awareness of miscarriage and stillbirth.

“Six families went through the same as us over the same weekend, in the same hospital. We are not the first and will definitely not be the last to encounter this forever heartache, but by raising money and awareness of baby loss in the memory of our son Michał we can make sure that future families have the same care and tools that we were so lucky to have.”

The event, which is not a times competition, gives riders a chance to take on three different routes, each offering a chance to take in the sights across the capital. Volunteers are also on hand to provide riders will full support throughout the evening, with regular break stops being provided on the course throughout the ride.
