The problem the business has is that's it's heading down a dead end trying to align hours and workload. It wants to have its cake and eat it.
It wants motivated staff working as efficiently as possible but it also wants all paid hours worked for.
The two things are mutually exclusive.
Nobody works faster just to get more work.
Somebody should tell Rico.
there are a few duties in ours where some are over a thousand calls.(mines one of them) and duties that have only half of that,...but they are equal....in the time it takes. the ones with less call are all garden paths, hills, steps. the duties with more calls are all terraced houses, open plan estates, flat terrain.

A fair point. Anyone can understand why posties might want to come in early if they are able to finish early. However problems seem to occur when the business decides to 'reward' all the posties with extra lapsing. You get some posties who don't see the point in doing extra work for nothing when they are doing the job by the book and are struggling to finish on time anyway; and there are others that will take it and will still try and race round trying to finish before their time whilst making mistakes like forgetting to scan tracked items or posting recorded's through the door without obtaining signatures.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Maybe they have been in the job for years, done all the crap walks and worked their way to a nice walk. That's the way it is. FFS it's bad enough with managers trying to screw you but when fellow workers do it that's bad news. They don't need PDAs when so called workmates can watch them for gaffers.
YOUR TALKING RUBBISH MATE WHY SHOULD SENIOR PEOPLE DO LESS WORK WE ALL GET THE SAME PAY,SENIOR PEOPLE GET FIRST CHOICE ON DUTIES HOLIDAYS AND LAPSING,BEEN TAKING THE MICK FOR FAR TOO LONG,NOW GET INLINE WITH EVERYONE ELSE,ALL WALKS SHOULD BE NEAR ENOUGH EVEN ANYWAY,SICK TO DEATH WITH THIS SENIORITY RUBBISH,AND BEFORE YOU REPLY IVE BEEN IN THE JOB FOR 20 YEARS SO SEEN IT FIRST HAND.

Despite the barrage of abuse you received , I think to some degree you have a point , I have noticed in the offices I've worked in, that there are too many people who are interested in what everyone else is doing.
I'm not sure whether I agree with you about senior people having done the crap walks, because I think nowadays walks are far heavier than they were 20-25 years ago, due to a number of factors, not least the abysmal, talentless planners we are encumbered with and the direction Royal Mail took when it introduced van share, which was out of date before it even started.
The set up of jobs and/or offices make for unfair workload for some. Someone getting away with it might be an issue if the manager is trying to treat the person struggling on a hard round like a lazy postie; and subsequent constant confrontations... The person that said he does not put the d2ds in because it slows down sorting is not likely a double prepped on two heavy rounds. I am still prepping gone 9am because the rounds are big and ips finishes late too... To have to wait to put all mail in before putting 5 lots of d2ds on two separate walks is laughable. It is so bad that the part time walk has d2ds done by managers on some days especially when we 5 or more.
No postie is 30 minutes faster or more efficient than I am on my walk or similar... But people finish 1.5hrs before me and start at same time.

I've noticed this in my office. People did a lot more work when you could go home earlier. But now there's no benefit of doing more work now.
There's been no changes to walk sizes at our office neither has it meant certain walks do less or more lapsing. There is a couple of people who they've chatted to because the pda shows them stopping for hours on end, but that's about it. They've just denied it.

In a nutshell, just use this reply on every topic on here with arguments about PDA actuals and the lack of use of them and for that matter why ahdc doesn't seem like the answer to problems or even why ghost overtime is still rife in most offices. The managers at the coal face know this but hose up in London at hq don't seem to

15 to 20 years ago we had a lot more physical weight in terms of letters & flats. I used to have about eight pouches of mail every day and nearly every pouch was overweight with about 25kg of mail in them. I agree there a lot more packets & parcels nowadays which take longer to deliver.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

I don't think it's going to be that many years before we (in MCs) process more Tracked than normal parcels
Not sure how it is in the rest of the country, but there is a noticeable 'split' in our office between short-medium and long time employees whenever the subject of either PDA actuals/clocking in-out/fairer ways of working is brought up.
Why not embrace this technology?

The noticeable split in my office, is the newer folk who have worked elsewhere and are aware of how the world of work has changed over the last 30 years. And those that have never worked anywhere but Royal Mail, and seem completely oblivious to how much crap people have to put up with nowadays.
They've lived in an absolute bubble, completely unaware of what's gone on in the real world. And as such, it's been a major shock to the system all the changes since privatisation.
