Seniority is a Joke
Why: One definition is:
Seniority: a privileged position earned by reason of longer service
The privilege is choosing which duty you will be doing for the next few years.

Seniority is a Joke
I assume that the people opposed to seniority would have no problem if someone jumped the queue in a shop,Pub or Taxi rank.
Without Seniority the most sycophantic or most domineering would then prevail at the expense of the hardest workers.

False equivalency. Try again.I assume that the people opposed to seniority would have no problem if someone jumped the queue in a shop,Pub or Taxi rank.

Seniority is a Joke
Nobody seems to come up with the answer as to why a manager suddenly given the power to assign duties would put their "best" posties on the "easiest" duties.
It's completely counter-intuitive.
If you take away seniority and give management that kind of power the fastest, most flexible, most reliable, most willing to do overtime and more importantly those that can't/won't stand up for themselves will get screwed every time and without seniority they will be able to look forward to that kind of treatment until retirement.
The lazy, the useless and the guys who stand up for themselves will end up with the easier duties simply because it's less hassle than dealing with cut offs and arguments on a daily basis. In case anyone hasn't noticed that's how RM management roll.

Seniority is a Joke
The problem for me is Postman A is on a duty they like get no complaints get great first time delivery figures but because Postman B has worked a year longer they take the duty on the resign no matter how poorly they have performed so quality of service drops postman A is demotivated leading to a drop in standards. Senior posties run the offices most managers have not got a clue and avoid work at all costs. There is no easy answer the duties are not as far apart as they used to be senior posties dont have it easy those days are long gone, we all work hard at least the posties in my office do and i expect its the same in most offices.

well said, its a fair system because it treats everyone the same - quite literally, theres not even any benefit to being faster if maybe you are fortunate to be more athletic than someone else - or any other variable, its purely a system of if you've been at Royal Mail and able to remain in your job at an employable standard then you get more seniority. Thats it ! theres no tricks or anything else, its the same for EVERYONE.vigilante wrote:I have been in the business 35 years.
I have never been on sick for more than 5 days.....ever...(touches wood)
When I joined, the old boys used to tell me, listen boy, you'll get your turn in the end of the best leave pick, give it a few years.
Now people who have just joined get the same pick as me or better.
Do you consider that fair?
Seniority was the best thing in place. You knew exactly where you stood....no arguments..
Sickness is sickness.
People will always take the p*ss. Whoever.
EVERYONE starts at the bottom, EVERYONE can move up the list with longer service.
Im struggling to think of what could be a fairer system based on any other variable.

It’s always been a fair system that favours nobody I remember when I started it got you a lot more than it does today but I can’t remember anyone complaining then,it seems like that has changed now and the new staff don’t think they should have to get the years in first

I find this quite amusing and telling.Whining and griping about seniority only seems to be a recent thing. In My office the same ones that moan about it are the ones that find it easier to throw their missorts onto a senior mans desk because they can’t be bothered to look them up on an overhead

I think it's complained about in contemporary terms, because it's a jarringly old school system.
When you've worked elsewhere and you come into RM, many aspects of the workplace feels like you've gone back in time 50 years.

That is why you have a rep who should be ensuring that all the pieces of the cake are roughly the same size.97gaz wrote:scoobydo79 wrote:I find this quite amusing and telling.Whining and griping about seniority only seems to be a recent thing. In My office the same ones that moan about it are the ones that find it easier to throw their missorts onto a senior mans desk because they can’t be bothered to look them up on an overhead
I think about it like this. Two people sitting around a cake. One person picks a piece and the other says
"You greedy Bas***d, picking the biggest bit of cake. I was going to have that!"
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

it happened before, but i think to a lesser degree, i think people nowadays have gotten used to instant gratification from all aspects of their lives, and something you actually have to wait for comes harder.scoobydo79 wrote:I find this quite amusing and telling.Whining and griping about seniority only seems to be a recent thing. In My office the same ones that moan about it are the ones that find it easier to throw their missorts onto a senior mans desk because they can’t be bothered to look them up on an overhead

Not true it always favours posties with the longest service.Driver74 wrote:It’s always been a fair system that favours nobody I remember when I started it got you a lot more than it does today but I can’t remember anyone complaining then,it seems like that has changed now and the new staff don’t think they should have to get the years in first
