It is being reported by the media that Post Office Limited’s (POL) post office closure consultations are a sham. This is because if a post office is saved from closure, POL may put forward another to close in its place.
The consultation process is not perfect but it is not about whether a closure programme should take place. The Government have already decided closures are needed, and will happen by the end of 2008. POL’s consultations are about which post offices should close. They need local authorities, MPs and customers to engage with the process to help ensure the right offices are closed.
Unfortunately, by labelling the process a sham there is a risk consultees will be put off from giving their comments. That would be a far greater shame, and risks a worse outcome.
