There is an assumption that because it's a letter or can fit through the letter box that it is somehow less important. Granted, We deliver allot of stuff that could probably wait until the next day but within that stuff is post people want asap and we can not tell the difference. Many people work/run businesses from home and not just industrial estates. Lawyers, Accountants and all manor of self employed people. Many of these people and businesses in general are operating 7 days a week these days. You hear people say we would still deliver to the industrial estates but would we still deliver to these people also? They are just as important customers.

I think it is far more likely we would extend the working week to the full 7 days. Later in to the day. With the possibility of separating items that fall within and outside the USO more efficiently as to be able to legally spread items across the week to speed up delivery to be able to extend the walks. More coverage with less posties 7 days a week. Incorporating the shorter working week. But all of that is totally and utterly made up speculative bullshit.

I think the latest place to switch to a less than every working day service is going to be the Channel Islands. Going by articles in the news section on this forum the majority of main delivery services are switching or are already doing it. I think the amount of letters people receive is a generational issue. If you compare addresses or areas where older people live compared to say housing estates with much younger residents the latter get much less and quite often no mail for days. When I occasionally deliver to loops on P&L walks I am amazed how many delivery points get no mail at all.
There is some dispute on the forum as to how much if any of the business is not covered by the USO. I would imagine delivering every working day to all delivery points is one of the main parts of the USO so we don't need to worry about it for a few years yet. Once over the ground is the most efficient way of getting everything delivered even in the eyes of RM as far as I know.
In terms of switching to a five day operation it has always been said by management that the Tuesday would be the day to be dropped and not Saturday. This is probably because RM make Tuesday so quiet and also shutting down on Saturday would leave two concurrent days with nothing being delivered.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Once the uso is up if they went to five days would they run every week like a bank holiday week?
Ie Tues-sat?, They could hold Mondays mail for Tuesday delivery like they currently do with Bank Hols and they wouldn't need as many reserves to cover as we'd all be working the same days?

How do you think all the businesses around the country would react to not getting any mail on a Monday? Never mind the big city centres and financial districts or would royal mail just suggest all these businesses shift their working weekly from Monday to Friday to Tuesday to Saturday to fit in with us. If it ever happens ,letters Monday to Friday at the most and parcels 7 days a week is the only sensible option
