The flaw in the employee survey is that it's entirely up to Royal Mail what information from the survey it promotes and what it chooses to bury. RM pays IPsos not only to collate the data but also to present it in a positive light. This means one year you might hear about score A going up and the next year score B while score A gets buried because it's gone down again. It makes the whole thing a pointless PR exercise.

What a complete and utter waste of time and money, when nothing is ever done if the results tell the truth about how the workforce truly feel about their job!!!!

Thank you for your email to Moya’s JustSayIt Site. I work as part of this team and your email has been shared with me for a response.

Completion of the survey is not mandatory although we would highly encourage all employees to take the opportunity to give their view.

As this is a work-related survey, employees have been allocated time at work (during their WTLL) to complete the survey, rather than expecting employees to fill in their survey at home in their own time. This process of completing the surveys at work is standard practice in many companies.

Each survey should have been given out in an envelope as part of a pack. Each pack contained the survey itself and a pre-paid envelope with Ipsos MORI’s address for returning the survey once completed. Ipsos MORI is an independent research company conducting the survey on RMG’s behalf. All employees can be confident that their answers will be treated in complete confidence. Ipsos MORI promises that surveys will never be linked to an individual. Ipsos MORI is a member of the Market Research Society. As a member, they are bound by its Code of Conduct not to identify individual respondents’ views.

Surveys should not have been handed back to managers without being sealed in the pre-paid/pre-addressed envelope. Managers should collect the sealed packs and return them in bulk via recorded delivery to Ipsos MORI (ideally using the bags that they arrived in). If employees specifically wish to, they can take the survey home and complete it and then return it in the post in the pre-paid and pre-addressed envelope direct to Ipsos MORI.

We ask people to take part in the survey so that they can share their views in a fair and consistent way, we also give people the opportunity to do this in a confidential environment. The survey gives people the chance to say what they want without being concerned about people finding out what they individually said. Also, only by surveying everyone in RMG will we get an overall view of what people think and be able to respond to that at a corporate level.

I hope I have provided some reassurance but please let me know if I can help further.

Kind regards

Jane

Last year we were told that the suggestions/comments individuals wrote on the EOS could not be shown to colleagues as this action could identify the individual, so infringing Data protection (GDPR), Although the managers read the content!. So where it states, ..."The survey gives people the chance to say what they want without being concerned about people finding out what they individually said".... this appears not to be the case.
On the basis of the decision not to show & therefore not discuss the suggestions/comments I opted not to complete the Survey this year.

Our DOM did tell me something about the written comments on the survey but I have forgotten what they said. I think it was there had to be a certain number of comments per DO and if the minimum figure wasn't reached then to protect the anonymous nature of the survey no comments would be given in the results.
Regarding negative & positive results from the survey the RM view low return rates of surveys the same as large percentages of low scores in the final results.
This year RM is running a trial of the survey to be completed by posties via the internet. The internet survey trial date starts once the paper survey date ends. Our DO was one of the offices picked to do the internet survey trial.

I am shocked by all these replies, this is a chance to collectivelly give an honest opinion about these eejits. I know for a fact a DO that had an appalling result last year, that was worse than the National Average and worse than the previous year results RM HR turned up and interviewed many posties with Union present. Now, this year the DIM and DIMMER are clutching at straws and will be away if they get another poor result.

Why are you not doing it in private? Tell them to do one if they are looking over your shoulder. Ask for the envelope and put it in and seal it yourself and put it in the mail bag yourself. Why are so many Posties feart of the management?

Just ripping it up achieves nothing. This is typical of a weak workforce, all whinging but not standing up and being counted.

Fill it in, or stop whining!

I was of a similar opinion. For the past 6 years I have filled in the EOS even adding A4 sheet with relevant comments on why resourcing agreements are not adhered to etc & last year I suggested that management commitment needed to be reviewed as every year the most important part of the survey, the action plan, is not produced. They promise each year it will be different but after the results the board intended for information is virtually blank.

This year a colleague was told they could not take the EOS home to complete, this is contrary to the letter which states: If employees specifically wish to, they can take the survey home and complete it and then return it in the post in the pre-paid and pre-addressed envelope direct to Ipsos MORI.

The management have said make it your choice to complete the EOS or otherwise but do not to be influenced by others. Yet the following week management are influencing employees to fill the survey.
Last year 16% of our shift decided not to complete the EOS, This year probably 23%.

The survey is not mandatory but I am not advocating others not to fill in the survey, However it is only right that colleagues should be aware it is their choice & management ought to be aware that employees have a right to take take the EOS home. Why do management feel the need to watch colleagues complete the form?

It is my opinion that if the suggestions/comments cannot be shared because of GDPR, as informed in 2018, then there is no point continuing to complete the EOS.

All surveys are a waste of time coz Noone fills then in.
Hence why this is last ever employee survey.
Makes this survey even more a waste of time then the rest.
Use the union for opinions and not pointless questions on a sheet of paper. Royal Mail will do what they want unless you stand together in union not on silly scribbles a piece of paper.

Could you substantiate "Hence why this is last ever employee survey." Do you mean personally or nationally?

I know the national completion figure of the EOS has dropped by 1% each year for the last 3 years & someone mentioned a trial of an online opinion survey.

I'll never understand why the union don't ask for photocopies off everyone and ask the questions are you in the union are you full or part time , on average how much o/t do you do and what could the union do to make your job better. We and they could then get all the results and act on them(or not as the case would probably be) The union would also get a clearer picture of issues that need tackling, percentage of employees in the union f/t p/t ratio and how much o/t is being done(they would then get a better picture of o/t holiday pay and pt working ft hours.

I don't bother filling it out as we never get results(apart from a select few questions) and certainly nothing ever gets done. If we could get the full picture I would.

Will never happen though as the union would have to get their head out of the sand.

It's a free country and the CWU could run its own survey with its own choice of questions if it decided to. It is actually a very good idea for them to do so.

Surveys do work and can provide useful information. For example most till receipts from the main shops have links to surveys to find out customers opinions. No chance of RM dropping the employee survey if for no other reason than it makes them look good. I mentioned the online survey which starts on the 15th March for the selected offices. Personally though I would say moving the survey online doesn't tie in with RMs campaign to promote more letters being sent by businesses.

We have been told by Manager that the survey will no longer be used after this years.
As i said waste of time. A very small minority take time to tick boxes. The rest dont bother or tick anything to get away. FACT. :arrrghhh

If a manager said so then it must be true! ... Apparently not ticking anything will still count as completed if you return the sealed envelope. However I believe the National results of people taking part will be fewer than last years figure of 82%.
