Like every thread on starting early or working for free the truth is out there but it's often well hidden.

As in most offices I suspect if someone came in two and a half hours early in my office there wouldn't be a great deal they could do apart from read the courier and get a brew on.

If the mail was available two and a half hours before our start time we would all still be on 5 o'clock starts, unfortunately it's still making its way through the machines at the mail centre at that time.

It doesn’t affect me so much as I’m full time, but there’s at least 7 hours a day here that are not going to part timers who coulld use the money. Is there anything that can be done. Union isn’t interested
How do you know union are not interested maybe the idiots who do it are not interested in unions advice.
The Union have tried very hard to get the do the job properly out message over to it's members for many, many years.
The first thing I recall on the Union notice board when I started was about using private cars on delivery!
The message then was it was costing jobs but everyone done it with job n knock, 6 day short deliveries, home at 10.00am.
That practice was a normal occurrence right up until the revisions were done and drop bags were abolished with shared vans introduced. It's been a very long ongoing problem, guess a lot of people's ears are stitched on.

Yep, two and a half hours early would be highly unusual.
Now 90% plus of those in for prepping, doing 30 minutes plus before time, unpaid! that amounts to a few hours, in a small office, stretching to a lot of hours with the possibility many new job opportunities in a larger unit.
Maybe even more FT jobs for some other PT staff, if those people only came in on time.
Just saying!!! Remember, I am talking about doing unpaid work here.

How do you know he starts at 4am?
Why is your office even open at 4am?
What are your arrival times?
What does he do for 2 and a half hours?
Is the work he does part of the indoor work plan?

It's only of any concern if the work he's doing is not being resourced because he's doing it for free. What often happens in these situations is that the guys who should be doing it just abuse the situation and get lazy.

If an office has a decent rep all of the work gets paid for because everything has to be accounted for in the weekly resource meeting. The work that Bob the insomniac is doing will be allocated to someone, it's just that they'll be having a coffee break and an extra smoke while Bob does it.

s**t offices with s**t reps will get s**t on but....they will anyway whether Bob comes in at 4am or 10 am.
Because he’s tells us.....he has his own keys, and yes, most of the sorting, packets and 6 walks are done. This is not my ne person this is about 3.

As I've tried to explain to you already it's only hours and jobs IF these hours are not being resourced, if these 90% of people doing 30mins "free" are finishing 30 minutes early there are no hours or job opportunities.

As I've also pointed out if you have 90% plus doing 30 minutes for free and NOT finishing early where the f**k is the rep because these guys are obviously being bullied.

The people doing it, the drivers who bring 5e mail. The gaffer. This isn’t paid overtime....this is doing it for free.

I dare say that eventually there may come a time where it is not beneficial to them and will resort to starting on time and face falling performance issues that would ensue, no doubt.
I believe the knock on effect is that more pressure is exerted on those who cannot complete on time as AB and C can do it! All duties are not the same unfortunately, it's the ones with no time to lapse who get the aggro, more staff would fix that.
My point is in many offices anyone returning before finish time are send out to do other work, obviously not the case in your office. The job and knock mentality has never left many OPGs and there are DOMs who do apply the working all paid hours.
The people going early are not bullied in my experience, they are treated like pinnacles of excellence, and many do say they would be unable to complete on time unless the did, which becomes a form of intimidation on those individuals.
People who go in early for no benefit in money, only in time! are making a choice that suits them, many others have their performances compared to them, a fact that PT delivery only guys experience a lot.
What's the Rep doing you ask, he try's to get everyone to start on time in the hope that things improve with no divisions.

Staff are not coming in because they are being "bullied'. They are coming in early to suit themselves. I came in this morning and about 70% of the staff had already got their mech in - which means that they have already given the business 30 minutes of their time. Now if they all were to finish half an hour early before their time without being given any extra work to do, then I would say ok...fair cop. But some of them are not making any time at all doing this and I find this seriously bonkers.

Plus being a "fair cop" is not what this business looks at in the long term. It looks at figures, it wants to know staff finishing times, it wants to maximise staff hours for increased efficiency. It also needs to ascertain if the SWW is sustainable but how the hell can it be when staff are openly cheating themselves???
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Higher up won't give a s**t that the half hour is being made by people coming in early before their proper start time. They'll just see a number of people finishing a total of say 60hrs before their finish times and they'll take 60hrs out of the office, net result more lapsing or walks permanently getting more delivery points added

Depends how you do it and what your office is like. Ours up untill last summer was job and knock; I'd come in an hour early Monday and Tuesday because I used to be finished between 11 - 12 which was fine. Now all that has gone so I don't bother. There's still those that do though simply because they can't complete their oversized walks without coming in early. That's ridiculous, and it makes those who might cover the duty look bad because they come in on time and go over. There are still people in our office that come in early and finish early, they're then sent back out! Totally mad.

Then there's other who drink 30 cups of coffee or smoke about 30 fags so come early and use the excess time to mess about, basically. That's fine; you're gaining any advantage doing that or making it look like the office has excess hours.
