Happy to have made the waiting list
Hi Callum, it does appear to be normal. I applied for quite a few before being successful on one. Each time the status would be " testing " and remained that way for a couple weeks until I got an "unsuccessful " email.
I've read on here that the chances of being successful on the waiting list are very good, they where for me.
My application went right down to the wire but I think that was partly due to only applying for really close vacancies for the first 5-6 weeks.
Congratulations on getting on the waiting list and good luck.

You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.
I worked for RM 1 whole week, before returning to me previous job, I was very lucky it was still available and have no regrets, the job itself of simply delivering Mail and parcels was very enjoyable, that’s where it stopped though, please read my earlier post titled ‘Absolute horror show’ for further details of my experience!

It sounds like your experience was likely a rare situation to be in....DannyAgar91 wrote:You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.

From reading a lot of online reviews of postal jobs at Royal Mail....the most common complaint was that managers are pushy and want you to work extra hours.
I will maybe soon find out if this is the case.

You’ll be lucky if your manager even knows or cares what your name is, mine said about 3 sentences to me all week, they expect the more experienced posties to sort you out, this is probably why they all seem miserable and show very little interest in helping, expected so much more from a company of this size, if you’re happy with your work day very unorganised with little to no help then it’ll be perfect!norris9 wrote:It sounds like your experience was likely a rare situation to be in....DannyAgar91 wrote:You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.

To add to this two of the people I was on the induction with have since messaged me having similar experiences in their own DO’s, they aren’t in a situation where they could just leave though so I feel their pain.DannyAgar91 wrote:You’ll be lucky if your manager even knows or cares what your name is, mine said about 3 sentences to me all week, they expect the more experienced posties to sort you out, this is probably why they all seem miserable and show very little interest in helping, expected so much more from a company of this size, if you’re happy with your work day very unorganised with little to no help then it’ll be perfect!norris9 wrote:It sounds like your experience was likely a rare situation to be in....DannyAgar91 wrote:You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, it does sound like you had a hard time so it was very fortunate for you that your previous employer kept your job open for you.
Your posts really help in managing expectations. Your previous post "Absolute horror show" describes a less than ideal start but after reading this forum for a couple of months, doesn't come as a surprise.
With all that said, I'm still excited about starting. You mentioned that the delivery of post and parcels was enjoyable and that's the part of the job that I'm looking forward to.

Im in my 4th week at RM and I can say I love it. The process to getting a job is long, but I have no complaints whatsoever.DannyAgar91 wrote:You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.

The guy I am paired with is very helpful and there is never a question that is too stupid to ask. People in the office have always said hello to me in the morning and I feel very relaxed working in the office.
Not sure why you found it so bad. Perhaps it just wasnt the job for you

Very happy you’ve been welcomed in it sounds like a very nice working environment, as I’ve said before this is just my experience it won’t be the same everywhere, I just wanted to share my experience, The idea of being a post man has always appealed to me but I’m someone who likes to be organised and know what I’m doing, at my DO there’s was no sense of that, very bad atmosphere, I’m not the only one who’s left there in a hurry.has2tri wrote:Im in my 4th week at RM and I can say I love it. I just wanted to share my experience after seeing this post and knowing I was as excited as you all are, I suppose I just expected it to be a lot different a lot more effort in training and being made to feel welcome, maybe my expectations where to high because the company I work for at the moment just feels like a family, and they’re a drop in the ocean compared to the size of Royal Mail, i hope non of you experience what I did and enjoy working for Royal Mail.Caesar wrote:Hi DannyAgar91DannyAgar91 wrote:You’re all far to excited for the horrow show you’re about to experience, the worst company I have ever worked for, training is minimal, people aren’t very helpful, more experienced post men find you as something to joke about rather than think about giving you advice or help.

I started last week in my DO, and was given the induction, a full days training in the DO (mostly watching boring videos), and then 4 days shadowing a workplace coach on my walk. Today was the first day doing my walk on my own (alongside the driver). I'm on a 28 hour contract, and so everything is already (mostly) thrown off by the time I get in in the mornings. I need to tie it up, load it up, then we go out on the walk.
The job itself is relatively simple, so I think the training I was given has been adequate. I asked if I could get a couple of hours overtime in the mornings this week so I could be shown how to do the throwing off, but the managers didn't want to pay the overtime and so I haven't been shown. I think this is pretty short-sighted of the management, but other than that my training has been good. Everyone's been friendly, managers check in with me, ask me if I have any issues, my driver is lovely, and my workplace coach was really helpful.
My legs, back and feet all ache, but nothing unbearable and I was expecting it so it's not a big deal. I knew that it would take a few weeks for me to physically adjust.
Sorry you had a bad experience in your DO DannyAgar91, but I did want to share mine too for anyone going though the application process.

Good to hear, the least people to have the same experience as me the better, I’ll just put it down to being unlucky I guess, all the best to everyone.

Week 7 on the list for me next week, still only applied for the only 2 jobs that have come up so far.
I was buzzing when i got put on the waiting list but it is slowly going down each day there are no new jobs advertised. Still plenty of time tho.

That's how it was for me towards the end. Are your applications still open or have you been contacted to say that you've been unsuccessful?
