Pre employment checks

How do they do these checks? Do they speak to your previous employers or do it another way?

I'm not sure how the checks are done but mine where done within a week.
For 4 of the 5 years I worked for myself though.

Thanks. I've got my start date but profile just changed to pre employment checks.

Mine was on pre employment checks until my security checks where completed, then it changed to " start date agreed"
