Can there be a vote of no confidence called in a rep that an office doesn’t want ?

Here we go again. Its all the Reps fault. Take a long hard look at yourselves as members. What ever the problem is if its not being resolved or taken seriously all go sit in the canteen, rest room or go stand on the gate. Draw attention to the problem, issue. Don't moan about it on here then do nothing about it. If the whole office all feel, as you say the way you do then do something about it.

Its easy to blame Unit reps although its a bit bad when they prefer to do managements work for them instead?? The CWU could give its members a vote every 2 years or so to replace ineffectual reps but part of the problem is that not many staff want the hassle of being a rep and dealing with petty disputes.
That said, I've known a few reps in the past that were only ever in it for themselves and they are the ones that actively destroy our Union.

Unit Reps ARE elected every two years and so are Area Reps. Members seem to forget that they are the Union. If there is an issue then do something about it don't just come on here moaning about it. Of course they won't do anything about it because it is easier to moan than actually stand up and be a Rep. Being a Rep can be a thankless task and of course Reps have to converse with managers because if you don't you are not representing your members in the best way.postslippete wrote:Its easy to blame Unit reps although its a bit bad when they prefer to do managements work for them instead?? Too many people see the four quid as some sort of “payment for service”. That money supports the whole structure and even if you get crap local representation, do you want route ownership? Do you ever take the benefit of our lovely sick policy? If we all jacked in our four quid, where would we be now?Trail wrote:Keep your four quid a month in your pocket as far as I'm concerned.

As stated earlier when I was subject of a harassment claim they sent five people my way to fight my corner. Not one was anything close to effective.
The four that represented us at our office were f*cking crap. One was a nice bloke, the other three were yes men...and as we all know nice guys don't get paid, so don't be a yes man.
Absolutely a waste of £4 a month.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion in all fairness and if you've had poor experiences with reps then fair enough however when you get paid on a Friday and compare it with other unskilled jobs or when you are sat on a beach getting holiday pay just remember its the cwu that fought long and hard for years to get us these perks and without the union you would be on minimum wage zero hours so yeah you had a bad experience but dont give up theres still alot of good reps about and now more than ever we all need to stick togetherTrail wrote:I just think the CWU are a waste of time to be fair.LaggyBand wrote:Too many people see the four quid as some sort of “payment for service”. You know what, you're completely right. Members are the Union, so why don't the CWU train as many of us members as possible to be Union Reps?? Surely, it would be better to have a dozen good, knowledgeable reps in an office standing up to their managers rather than perhaps have one rep that everyone else relies on when they got problems with the managers or the workplace methinks?
As for issues, I've had many but the way I've dealt with them is via grievances so all I've ever needed from my rep is a grievance form!! Advice on what to put on the grievance form so that it gets dealt with efficiently is something that all us members could and should be trained to do. Being a rep involves thankless tasks like Union meetings....something which I can't remember us having for months, but hey, as long as they are conversing with managers thats quite alright.

I can understand the frustration but members need to demand a meeting as is their right. If the Rep does not comply then it needs to be referred to the Branch office. On the point of rep's Royal Mail would not recognise the amount of Rep's in one office you are talking about.

No they wouldn't recognize more than a couple of reps in an office because what managers like to do is try and befriend reps for their own gain. I've seen many instances of offices bypassing national agreements andinstead seeking out local agreements where possible and it's certainly not been for the benefit of its members.
As for meetings with members I just think that good reps should inform it's members with a meeting even if it's only every few months or so. Keep their members in the loop as regards all the weekly resource meetings or whatever they are called that they have with the DOM. I dont know about smaller units but larger offices allegedly have them so it looks good on their 'action plan wallchart'

Good rep's should inform members of what is going on but if they don't members should demand to know what is going on. Don't expect the meeting in RM time though unless it can be worked into WTLL. Would be interesting to see how many of your members would turn out for a meeting at 19:00. The amount of rep's is agreed in the national IR structure which is agreed with Royal Mail and the CWU. The problem is that if a unit rep does not get on with the dom it would not be in the best interest of the members. It may look good to argue and shout at the dom when all can see but the days of walking out of offices and meetings and slamming doors and shouting are over. Rep's are now in a different place.postslippete wrote:No they wouldn't recognize more than a couple of reps in an office because what managers like to do is try and befriend reps for their own gain. Royal Mail can't stop an office from forming a union comitee and neither can a rep. Preferably pick some full and part-time members. The rep deals with management and reports back to the committee. The committee can take some of the pressure off the rep by communicating directly to the staff by way of a monthly report and the members can bring up any issues directly to the committee. Just takes a bit of organising and a photocopier.
It's a way of keeping staff in the loop, encouraging union engagement and keeping the rep straight.
