I did read the whole post.
Firstly any part timer is entitled to work their day off to supplement their income.
So now you are saying you don't agree with the original post?
Did you actually read it?

In my experience what usually stops part-time staff from getting full-time work is the amount of overtime done by full-time staff.
The union has always had a soft spot for protecting earnings over protecting contracts. Some offices would rather run with half a dozen vacancies as long as some of the guys get to "work" 70 hrs+ a week.

What should a part-timer do in this situation, well they could always turn down their overtime and let the full-time staff hoover it up....but that really would be stupid.

It will always happen because they can bank the indoor hours for the duty on that day and pay overtime for the outdoor so they are saving money against the budget, it's the reason offices like to run with vacancies. It's a no win situation for PT staff, if they refuse overtime someone else will do it but while the rounds get done on overtime and at a cheaper cost why would a manager pay out more money on bigger contracts or more staff?

Stupidity, and no ability to listen to sound advice.
Given that they have been told there would be a review of p/t hours every six months, why would anyone seriously believe that not working the hours will lead to an increase in contracted hours? That is counter intuitive.
And for who?
What benefit is there for someone with little or no seniority to give up wages to benefit someone else?
And you call them stupid? Some f***ing rep you are.

Sound advice?
When is the issue of part time holiday pay going to get addressed?

They don't listen to "sound advice" mainly because it is shite advice.
Maybe all these full timers who are full of sound advice for p/t staff should give up their full time contracts and put their money where their mouth is.
No thought not.
Tek a f***ing bow son.... :Applause :Applause :Applause
:cuppa :whistle :arrrghhh
Take another read at the full post, and not a cropped section to allow a blowhard to mouth off, then reconsider your adoration of Clash, at my expense. Telling people not to work for nowt is hardly shite advice and in the long term RM would not have a ready made excuse NOT to give those PT staff FT contracts.
By the way I did put my money where my mouth was! I dropped to part time work on the belief that a part timer would be made up with many young men waiting on FT, hey presto! it never transpired. Too many others prepared to pick up the slack for NO financial benefit. Sound advice falling on deaf ears is a sign of stupidity to me but I am sure you and Clash do not need any, so I will take a f***ing bow to your superior knowledge and blind loyalty to Clash’s opinion. :Applause

It’s my opinion pal, you may not like it but it’s mine. I’ve been made up to ft, not so long ago. You don’t have to get arsenal either, you sound like a long time full timer :left: :left: . I don’t work for nothing, and you are hundred percent right that those that do are there own worst enemies. However i agree with Clash, and I want him to take a bow, but you can to if it makes you feel better :thumbup

Should have read something like “ if given the chance”
Yet again you take a snippet from a post omitting the reasoning part, pasting what suits your view to promote an argument.
Your past posting record speaks volumes about your condescending attitude towards other posters, you really do have a high opinion of yourself while running others down, you should be proud of your inflated ego! You are not as good or so well informed as you may think, treating all DOs like your own and making many over the top statements and assumptions, like thinking I was actually a Rep.
Many moons ago yes I was, but the experience of representing old soldiers only interested in themselves while running down their own colleagues, and hearing spouting rhetoric from “ know all’s” like you, made it a thankless task.
I could not really accept that having worked with good people before RM, that there were so many selfish, spineless people in such abundance working in a delivery office, not to mention the office underground moles ready to tell a tale or two.

Actually the main post was about managers doing OPG work, then grew arms n legs into that costing full time jobs.
Folk not doing the job properly - That includes many PTs who would benefit the most from the increasing hours.
That impacts mainly on the PTs chances of ever being made up. The CWU are seemingly oblivious to that problem.
I said PTs are their own worst enemy by going in early for no payement, missin* breaks to keep FT partners happy and they don’t listen to sound advice. They are behaving in a stupid manner. You stated that was shite advice,
Part timers get very little regular OT opportunity. FTs get first choice off cleaning up any OT, working days off -only on their own duty, floaters shafted onto another often unfamiliar duty. Strange how this behaviour is acceptable to older soldiers!
Any PTs Working their day of ? They only get paid for the exact hours worked,- before starting time? well yer a good lad.
Going in early they get nowt! ( like many other full timers, btw )
More work gets done on the cheap, therefore nothing added to the real/true required office hours.
Less full time work equates to no increase in their part time hours.
Full timers happy, DOM happy!
PTs lose out! All simple facts you seem hell bent on bringing into some dispute. :wave

And for some reason you feel the need to add personal insult to personal insult in your posts. It doesn't make you a big man.

But I stand by my original assertion: Telling a part time colleague that not working their day off will lead to an increase in their contracted hours is pish advice.

Plenty to say, mostly in a condescending manner, trying to pick away at loopholes that were never there or intended.
Doorstepped listed basically 5 points on doing the job properly, that resulted in more FT jobs and further PT posties, a success story in doing the job properly. My response basically, was that in doing the job properly was “ so easy and true”.
I went on to say that PTs were the most common people not doing the job properly by going in early unpaid, often to appease FT partners. It was doorstepped who listed not working days off to force the issue and get more jobs.
I am not a claiming to be a big man, it’s you that has plenty to say after 27;000 posts to assert your big man mentality and by implementation, assuming a better more educated view of having the real problem solving answers with in delivery.
If my saying you are not always accurate, suggesting you need to brush up on your scan and skimming skills and that you talk a lot of hot air offends your ego to the point of it being a personal insult, then even you probably realise your own failures, what a shame!
I took the thread and expanded, and if you are a Rep or so inclined to promote union memberships interests, the fact that managers are doing OPG work really does impact on FT and PT work opportunity to CWU members. Can you agree with that?
You have picked up on one aspect of many points I raised like rabid dog to make an impression, well done at nit picking!
I do not have a big man attitude in all honesty. I have a large circle of family friends and social friends and not known to be forcefull outspoken, generally. I suggest you look in a large mirror because in reality you probably suffer from that small man syndrome, vent off on social media threads ( 27,000 times on one alone ! ) for company and bore the arse of anyone who has the unfortunate luck to get stuck with and suffer your very presence.
Don’t bother responding! I am out of here, while still able to see some of the good on the site which diminishes every time I see any of your comments.
Seriously, good bye, I accept defeat and cannot and will not offer advice that is obviously much inferior to yours, :wave
Oh, and by the way I always thought Strummer was shite as well, only joking!

To get contract hours increases fro part-timers needs a whole load of stars to align, including...
OPGs to stop coming in to do early paid overtime on parcels and/or letters
OPGs to stop coming in early and working for free, especially full-timers who haven't adjusted to their later start time for the one hour weekly reduction from last September
OPGs to follow SSOW protocol on delivery :left:
OPGs to stop completing deliveries on overtime
etc.

Problem is, there's too many full-time and part-time OPGs that need that overtime money in the short term, they will often "crack" before the managers "crack" and increase the contract hours budget.

A lot of staff can't even manage to work to standard, turn up on time or work their paid hours.
I do get a chuckle from the "do the job properly" zealots.

After a recent successful case taken by officers against the psni to do with overtime being included in holiday pay surely a ballot should be taken for rm staff to do the same? Voluntary or not hours worked should count towards holiday pay while we are still in the eurozone anyway.

I agree with you! It can be a cat and mouse scenario. My feeling is the managers hold all the cards and have more time to wait, then the exploitation is much easier
It is very hard for people who need the extra money, but what I cannot understand is why people give up their own time for no recompense at all. It's simple economics, if the work is done with the help of people who do not get paid for it while at the same time allowing them to give and get more work done within contracted hours - lapsing, they do not need to address any staff numbers shortfall. Loss or prospect of any further job opportunity for others lies firmly at the hands of those who do not do the job properly.

Very few people actually work for free in this business.
In order to have a grown up conversation you would need to discuss start times against finishing times, performance and individual work rate.
It's a dead end argument and an unnecessary distraction.

Fair point, but normally they get some form of warning, especially those routinely turning up late and there are prepping standards that need to be met with more training.
What is the balance in your office, crap posties v those who work for nowt! or those not working properly, as per RM rules.
Some people are not as fast as others either on foot or at sorting, working all paid hours? well it's up to managers to utilise all paid hours and then there can be no argument about issuing lapsed work to do just that. Late start? Only gets added to the scheduled finish time surely, you are still expected to do your hours and not swan off early.
Doing the job properly can impact on the amount of duty time available to allow lapsing, an undeniable fact.
People going into workup to 1 hour early to prep mech mail are working for nothing - unless it is authorised OT sanctioned by the manager and Rep included At the resourcing meeting.

People do give up their own time free!
Before time and relinquish their paid break time to do other work.
