Seems like you already have all the unit deserves, and you have answered the reasons better than I could ever comprehend.chickenwittle wrote:Our rep is a s**t bag who only does it to protect himself , he gets away with murder and doesn’t give a toss about anyone and the area rep knows it .Problem is nobody else wants to take it on .

A true summary of trying to represent many posties - an extremely selfish breed I'm afraid !Sir Henry wrote:And therein lies the problem. And yes being a rep is utterly s**t, your efforts are only appreciated for as long as you're saving the job of some c*** who should know better. Training is next to none existent, any release time is taken up with engagement meetings between you and the screws, your breaks are spent answering endless pointless hypothetical questions or being made to fight someone's personal battles for them. If the progress takes time, you're doing nothing, if things go one way half the workforce hate you, is its goes the other....if you're thinking of becoming a rep or a subbie think again as for the most part the people you end up trying to defend (usually the same faces) time and time again aren't worth the hassle

Reps blame the members, members blame the reps.
Same thread different day.
What doesn't get mentioned is that these members are paying for a service, it's a multi-million pound business and if your only answer to the problem of people not getting what they pay good money for is that they should do it themselves it's hardly surprising that they consider cancelling their subscription.
If you're a good rep you should be standing up at your branch meetings and asking why representation is so poor in some offices, you should be pushing your branch to ask these questions at conference. You should be prepared to do more to ensure accountability for the members who are paying for a service and not receiving it.
How many of those prepared to blame the members and defend the union are prepared to do that?

Simple fact, Reps fight a losing battle without members support ! I do not advocate doing it for themselves , ever ! That only allows for a precedent in an office where others are expected to follow a similar route, by passing agreements to the benefit of the DOM, generally speaking and often detrimental to others. I am no fan of that or many local agreements.Woody Guthrie wrote:Reps blame the members, members blame the reps.

The DOMs play on that fact and thrive on a split office, half their job already done !, can do as they wish, unchallenged.
It is a paid for service because it costs a lot of money to organise a trade union organisation, nationally and legal representation in court instances are very costly. Members, nationally, need organised legally binding agreements.
Where I do agree with you is about accountability by the hierarchy. They do not appear to be very much interested in grass root problems that effect the members on a daily basis. They assume - often wrongly in general - that these problems get dealt with or SHOULD be dealt with at local and area level, they don’t like the B&H cases. I those cases they do tend to bury their heads in the sand and they are slow to realise the real impact on posties at grass root level, unfortunately!
