What other job would pay you to work 38 hrs and happily let you work less.

Plenty of jobs pay overtime at time and a half so those companies are paying people after they have gone home just in different way

Manager behind a HCT just inside the door doing the 'Meet n Greet' as we call it, like they were doing until just before Christmas. Only now they're demanding a visual check of everyone to see they're back and not been dropped off home. Twenty minutes or even just fifteen before finishing time? Go do your D2Ds for tomorrow. This was the conversation I had yesterday:

'You've finished early, you can't leave yet.'

'Ten minutes. Ten minutes early.'

'Put tomorrow's door to doors in.'

'Okay, then, thanks very much. Good discussion.'

Doesn't bother me too much as I rarely finish early anyway (it's been eerily quiet past two days) but some of the old timers are really losing their s**t over it. They've also started sending people back out if they come back too early. I think it's fair to say any remaining goodwill is being blown into the stratosphere, judging by the comments I've overheard. Yet it bemuses me that I see posties who were moaning yesterday afternoon about having to stay on for twenty minutes have turned up for work early this morning :arrrghhh

Anyway, a lot of us saw this coming and it appears to have arrived in our DO. I think 2019 is going to be...erm...interesting...
your lucky, turning you around has been going on for ages. just work your time, job and finish has gone

If there's work to do (like putting in D2D's), a manager asking you to stay until you are due to finish in order to do that work (or part of that work) is not in any way an unreasonable request. I'm still surprised that it doesn't happen more.

We have full time staff finishing at 12.30 - 12.45 most days who get paid till 14.00-14.30. They get to go home.
At the same time we have part timers finishing after the finishing time who at being asked to take out extra loops for other jobs and are getting paid overtime for it.

Poor management. If you wanted to start a business and showed this staffing plan to the bank you would get laughed out the door.

I can remember a couple of times at least when we extended on delivery and was told by management that they were paying my partner but not me!Just a tip of the iceberg of the s**t I had to put up with before I got out,or should I say forced out,and that was after long service. Karma will come :hmmmm

Banking of hours will be the best and worst thing to happen, it will make posties start on time and take their breaks but it will make all of us work longer and o/t will be paid only if we go o/t a bit like Christmas was for me the last two years. Managers should be telling early finishers to prep theirs or others D2Ds so they do not do unnecessary work on busy days and risk going over or not completing.

RM in terms of DOs and how they operate are different to the majority of other jobs. There are so many variables to take into consideration such as Postie's working in different ways/speeds, wildly differing amounts of mail, not all walks being the same length. Its not like working your hours in an MC then downing tools and going home.

Banking hours, automatic capture of hours and PDA data will in no conceivable way be "good" for us. Anyone daft enough to think that knows nothing about RM management culture.

All of these things done right take time and effort so they will be done wrong, they'll be abused and used to bully some people (those that book extended or cut off) and they'll be ignored when it suits management (those that start early, finish early and don't take their break).

If you don't think that will happen I have some magic beans for sale.

If you work your hours now it will make no difference, but for the majority it will be a bad thing and far worse for the early start no break posties. How much are those beans you speak of ?

far worse for the early start no break posties.
Why?
Why would any of these lazy managers bother with a group of posties who don't cause them any issues?
Especially if you know that the end result of all that extra hassle will only be that they start on time and take their breaks.
What's the upside for the business?

They'll abuse the data to confront those that extend or cut off, they'll manipulate the data to show that it's your inefficiency that's causing the issues. They'll optimise the s**t out of your delivery so that there isn't a minute where you're not moving both indoor and outdoor. Meanwhile the same shirkers will continue to shirk because that's the way it's always been.

TrueBlueTerrier wrote:But there is also the flexibility agreement which specifically mentions "swings and roundabouts". So why can't posties use that agreement to benefit themselves, if you go over by 10 minutes one day and don't claim, what's wrong with asking management to be flexible and let you finish 10 minutes early another day?
Tried it. Negative response. Office is a mess, 'resource in spite of workload' etc. Flexing up is of course a much different story :cuppa

Make the most of it, it will definitely change very soon. I totally agree with what you say, it's crazy. It's like paying people to come in early and prep, knowing full well that they always finish their duties an hr early. It's this kind of, and I use the term very loosely, 'management' , that will be very, very closely looked at very soon. Some people and that includes management, are gonna get a big kick up their ass soon. All this wasting of money has got to stop.

From what the OP suggests I liken it to being back at school with the teachers stood at the front gates ensuring none of their pupils leave before the bell goes. You will always get one or two crafty ones that manage to dodge them and sneak out the back door i.e. get dropped off home so they don't have to return to the office
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
