My concern is when the time comes when they start stripping services out of the USO. What happens to the working conditions of the people who operate outside of it?

If Royal Mail didn't have to deliver on a sat, but it was commercially preferable that they did, could they just employ casual workers on 8 quid an hour to deliver parcels?

I'm sure the time will come when the delivery of letters is a 3 day a week service.

So is that working 5 weeks of 6 days? Just to get a week off.. you’d be burnt out by the time your week off comes. No thanks

Mon-fri rumour

A Mon-Fri working week is a fantasy. Modern corporations like RM want to run seven day operations. There's much more chance of Sunday deliveries being introduced than Saturdays being cut.

Probably most attractive to RM would be to deliver alternate days Mon-Fri with a paid for option allowing recipients to receive every weekday. Then on weekends just do parcels and priority letters, and again, a paid for option to receive other things on those days.

So as a householder/business not opting to pay for more deliveries to your property you'd receive packets and mail on Mon, Wed, Fri in half the weeks and Tue and Thu in the other weeks. You'd get packets and priorities delivered in both Sat and Sun.

The big stumbling block is that the other businesses that parasite on our deliveries have absolutely no incentive to agree to us delivering their mail on alternate days.

So we'll be stuck with the current Mon-Sat model and if anything changes it'll be to turn it into a Mon-Sun model (probably with Sundays initially being introduced in a way like LATs are now).

I could probably cope with it doing Parcelforce work... but walking 12-14 miles a day for 5 six day weeks, no chance!

mon to fri for parcels and letters
sat parcels only
(maybe even sunday aswell)

I can see that coming in, and I don't think there would be a shortage of people offering to do parcels only on Saturdays as overtime. The problem RM would have is they would have a fight against the union because of the amount of possible job losses, but for RM this idea would save a lot of money again possibly

What a disgraceful attitude. We have day-off covers with 15 years experience in our place, but you wouldn't give a toss about them losing their jobs if it means you get to work Monday to Friday? As long as you are OK I guess, screw everyone else.

More likely to gain a Sunday than lose a Saturday.

I think that parcels, SDs and Tracked will eventually be a Mon-Sun service (with probably a premium paid for Sunday delivery)

There's hardly enough letters to keep going Mon-Sat never mind Sundays. What would be the point in taking on extra staff to cover an extra day? We may end up delivering parcels on a Sunday on overtime, but i can't see how delivering letters would be profitable.

I could see this and wouldn't mind it either, Letters only Mon - Fri and no letters saturday except maybe recorded and specials and maybe first class? then just Parcels on saturdays and maybe eventually sundays. With the shorter working week not likely to work in my opinion as at the moment more the half the days in my office you ever have to cut off or go over anyway i could see them say making it a 4/5hour day on a saturday perhaps and putting more hours back on to the other days. Cant see it happening any time soon though

That's because you have a union that is still pretty strong even though they do get it wrong. Or do you want to be out on a SUNDAY for no extra money, (no double time anymore). As for not having enough letters to justify a mon_sat delivery, yous can't have it both ways. It that's the case, why moan about taking out lapsing. Management do read this form also. :arrrghhh

While I agree with you his attitude is selfish - its not ' senior floaters' who are at risk as they would have enough seniority generally to sign for another duty, but rather reserves - guys just in the door past few years. The guys with lower seniority who have been in 5+ years but not enough to get a duty would be kept as reserves covering holiday and sick i'd imagine.

I dont believe the rumour anyway
