They're Turning The Screw...

Post by Mr Rush »

The more senior staff will throw their toys out of the pram at the suggestion of working all the hours they get paid for, but let us not forget who planted the idea of Job & Finish in their minds. Like the other 'Spanish Practices' that RM denounced many years back, it was either their own creation or one they did nothing to stop so long as it benefitted them.
The machine stops.

Job&finish was axed in the Pay & Mod agreement (however many years ago that was). If they're finishing early enough, frequent enough, that's going to give the DOM scope to add more delivery points to their walk

I found it difficult to long the round out or to go hiding for 2 hrs,the other day I done my round and absorption, and returned to the office about an hour before finish time was sent back out with work, which I found annoying as the people with the easiest walks were sitting in the pub which the manager knows about, how is this fair I'm being punished for being honest the others are having a jolly up

did you start on your time , take your 40 mins meal relief and use the equipment and if you did an did your duty and extra and still get back 1 hour before your finish time , well done :Applause , but then to say others are taking the piss and have easyier walks or sat in the pub to take them up to there time ( do they do the job right ) they are working all there paid hours , so why does this bother you ? , if your dom thinks this as you say why doesn't he use the pda actuals that's what its there for .

Frankly, I am disappointed by both sides of this discussion. On neither side is everything Black and White, on neither side is everyone right and the other wrong.

As with most things its shades of grey.

Should you be concerned about being asked to finish exactly on time, no - and yes Job and finish has ended. But there is also the flexibility agreement which specifically mentions "swings and roundabouts". So why can't posties use that agreement to benefit themselves, if you go over by 10 minutes one day and don't claim, what's wrong with asking management to be flexible and let you finish 10 minutes early another day?

This thread is a microcosm of the problems Royal Mail faces:

1. Intransigent and inflexible management culture with more than a hint of B&H.
2. Posties looking down on more junior/senior staff.
3. Posties generalising about others and denigrating them based on too little information and personal bias.
4. Managers wondering where the goodwill has gone when they don't apply it equally or fairly.
5. Everyone being concerned about what other posties are doing and either feeling done over because they think others are playing the system.
6. Everyone being concerned about what other posties are doing because they don't do the job exactly by the book and it makes them feel superior.

Other posties are our colleagues and are full grown adults, they have their reasons for doing what they do. If they are doing something wrong they will come a cropper at some time, but I am not helping managers by adding to the B&H culture and stress levels. I go in do the job to the best of my ability and let others get on with theirs, anything else is managements responsibility.

Ok if asked I will put my opinion across to anyone when asked, and try to educate them in what I think would make the job better, but look down on them because they do it differently - No.

Quite.

Some of the posts on here that sneer at those who are feeling pressured into working their breaks or coming in early or who go over day after day are particularly sad. We should be speaking up for each other rather than moaning about 'runners' or 'snails'.

Did you not think this whole idea was engine-rd by the management thing was their was a postal strike about 1986 about casual staff and erosion of terms has increased at more pace as time and other strikes since time was a job was for life time now is just a job for now, And part of this is neo conservative policy and living longer but now in poverty since the 1980's these times have seen vast growth in the service sector and finance sectors at the detriment of most for the wealth does travel to top from bottom is it any wonder that people vote FOR LEAVING THE EU because the rich told them it would a good idea because they can do as they please themselves at our expense and do not have to live here as they can cavort abroad with a woman half their age. And may I say this if this man? became PM for us lacking in the clarity of thought and decency not to be here on this land when the biggest debate in our history is nothing but two fingers too us all.

Goodwill has to go both ways. I'm not generalising across RM but just speaking purely from my office.

Over Xmas lots of people cleared daily and went over their time. Those people, like me, would like a bit of goodwill back.

However there are people in my office who were laughing at managers when they thought they might not clear, they were giving back rows or packets on a daily basis because they only want to work their hours. That's fine.
BUT these same people now want to finish at 1 o clock and when they're asked about working their time they start talking about goodwill. Unfortunately these people are the problem.

I totally understand people can't or won't work over their time. (I've worked here long enough to remember when everyone cleared regardless so I keep those principles). But you can't have it both ways.
You can't say you only want to work your hours and are happy to work them. Thrn complain about being asked to work them on quieter days.

Unfortunately these people stop the goodwill coming back to people like me who has cleared over Xmas because they will claim bullying.

It's a minefield and it im not suggesting singling out people who genuinely have to pick kids up at 3pm or anything like that. But nobody can think it's right to want to work contracted hours over Xmas and then finish earlier for 10months of the year without giving a little bit in return.

Didn't think so.
This isn't any other job. If you're on a production line that line is running 24 hours per day, your workload never changes. It does change in this job; I struggle to fill my hours Tuesday yet we all know what Wednesday is like. If they wanna screw their face coz we're done 20 or 30 minutes early fine, but out of principle the next time it's busy ill be cutting off. They want it both ways. Nobody can 'work to their time' every day, if you claim to it's because on quiet days you're sand bagging it and stretching your time out. That's not 'doing the job properly.'
