Day off/working Saturdays

Post by Mrsd »

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I started 8 weeks ago and my day off is Tuesday every week yet my understanding was when I applied for this job it was rotational days off with 1 in 6 saturdays off?

Will this change after probation or have i to just suck it up?

Keep a record of what you work, then insist on 1 in 6 Saturdays off. To which you're entitled.

P.S. you'll find that everything in RM is a fight, if you stay quiet you'll never get any Saturdays off, if you consistently moan like s**t, you will.

You get Tuesday because it's easier for them to cover duties; it's the lightest day of the week so they lapse walks. You need to look at your contract, from what I recall they have rewritten them so you're not entitled to Saturdays. I know our office offers thirty hour contracts to new starters on the basis you agree to work Sundays.

They still mention a rotational day off in job adverts so there must be some recourse to actually achieving it?

Exactly this.

They're relying on you being too worried about your probation period to say anything, for fear of rocking the boat. The same as they hope you'll come in early for free like others do, not have a break and go over your time every day to finish. We were all the same at one point. Some remain it like it, but if you can stick up for yourself and let them know you are not one of the ones they can take this piss out of then it will be a turning point for you and the job will become so much easier overnight.

It shouldn't be, but working for Royal Mail is a war of attrition a lot of the time and a mental battle of wits. If you let them roll you over a barrel they'll just get the next one ready, but if you can say 'um, hang on, I don't think this is right or fair' they'll leave you alone for an easier target. At the end of the day the manager's are just passing down the s**t they get from above in order to get through the day. Us posties don't have anyone below us to pass that s**t down to, so we have two choices:

1. Stand there with that s**t dripping onto our shoulders. Or,

2. Start boomeranging that s**t back.

Managers don't like that s**t being flung back at them, so they'll stop passing it onto you and pass it elsewhere.

Moral of the story. Become a s**t boomerang and go get your Saturday off.

Good luck :thumbup

You're also getting the, I assume in your office, the shortest day of the week as a day off.

I'm on a 28 hour contract (part time). I have worked for RM for just over year and had only two (2) Saturdays off. I have never had a long weekend - a Saturday followed by the next Monday.

Am I Actually "ENTITLED" to 1 in 6 Saturdays off?? If I am "Entitled" where is this written please, or where can I find it to read up fully on this issue? Or should I re-read my Contract.
Am I being treated differently to others because I'm 'part time' and not on a rota?? Is this then a fairness issue about which I can start a 'Grievance' ??
It's all a be new to me and theres lots to get my head round.

Thanks . . .

You are entitled to the EQUIVALENT of 1 in 6 Saturdays off but no long weekends unless you're a duty holder if memory serves. The reality is that unless you drag your rep in to see the boss every six weeks you won't be getting anything like the equivalent of one in six Saturdays off. I mean is it the equivalent over a rolling year, a calendar year, several years? The union have been utterly fuckng useless regarding Saturday's off.

Truth of the matter, there will be an agreement written somewhere. The real truth of the matter is that Duty Holders get at least 1 in 6 Saturdays off, so you should too.

The reason you haven't gotten any Saturdays off is cause RM take advantage of their new staff. The staff that have been around for 30 years, know how it operates, this is why they scream bloody murder whenever they have to do the slightest bit above their minimum.

The only logical response, if you want to stop being taken advantage of, is to consistently moan like s**t.

It's the RM way.

What you are encountering is standard practice in RM with new posties especially if you don't start with your own walk which will be highly unlikely to happen nowadays. What you need to do is join the union then pursue the situation via your union rep. If successful it can sometimes work out that you get more Saturdays and long weekends than anyone else. If you don't act the situation will stay as it is now.

Saturday Attendances
In addition to the above it is jointly recognised that Saturday attendances and in particular the number of Saturdays worked require special attention in order to meet the aspirations of employees and the needs of the business.
In recognition of this Royal Mail and CWU commit to providing more Saturday off options as part of improved attendance patterns for delivery employees. We have jointly explored and identified a number of options/opportunities to maximise the number of Saturdays off.
Whilst the precise number of Saturdays off and the aspirations of employees will vary from unit to unit, both parties believe we can deliver cost effective and reliable options that will maximise the number of Saturdays off for those who wish them. Royal Mail and CWU commit to achieving at least 1 in 4 Saturdays off for the majority of employees (including reserves)

Thanks for all the replies;
'zipmeister', is this part of a document? Is this available for me to download or obtain somewhere? It reads like its from the CWU - it sound like a recommendation or suggestion rather than any sort of 'policy'. Is it enforceable ?
It still seems that the 'Local practice' is whatever they like - all in the cause of productivity and the good of the business.

Thanks people - I shall continue my quest to sort this because I believe I (and others) are being treated differently which I believe is wrong.
