Our office has (much to our surprise) just hired 4 new guys, 3 of which are on so-called "1 hour contracts". One of these has already left after 2 days. Apparently they get 1 hour of contracted pay every week and everything on top of that is overtime. They didn't even know they were on 1 hour contracts... and they've also had no induction, just straight into shadowing someone on delivery for 2 days then out on their own.
Has anyone ever heard of this before? This sounds like casuals to me... Why would anyone even agree to a 1 hour contract knowing that they'll get paid about a fiver a week during holiday, and no guaranteed income?

Shouldn't the local reps be using the disagreement procedure against these jobs?
I know its hard to keep a track because RM just bring these people in.
A tip that my rep uses is he has subsribed to the Royal Mail recruitment page. They then email him any jobs that are being advertised in our area. Royal Mail do 99.9% of recruitment on the net now so reps can actually use this to challenge management BEFORE the people start!

Our office hasn't had a local rep for years, the Peterborough mail centre delivery rep has always covered our place too. He's rushed off his feet with everything going off at the moment. This is why we needed a new rep and I've stepped in, but I've only just started and haven't really had any help with things.
These new starters were just brought in, even our manager didn't know there was going to be 4 of them. They've had no formal induction, whereas they'd normally spend a couple of days at Peterborough getting basic training. I don't know what's going on anymore.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
