APPRENTICES! Checks, etc?

Post by niccrogers »

I'm really interested in one of the apprenticeships currently available with RM. I'm a little worried about even applying due my background and was hoping for some advice, partially if anyone has completed the application process with a kind of blip in their past.

Basically, I have really struggled with a mental health issue for the last couple of years (without realising) so it has left me with an awkward job history. I've often left jobs abruptly due to really deliberating anxiety. I don't feel like I look good on paper or from a referencing point of view. It's been temp jobs with some gaps inbetween. I'm wondering if it's better to apply for this After I've held a stable job for a period of time? It's just recently been a difficult time but I'm sure this time next year it'll be fine.

I also have a criminal record as of recently, its not too serious. There's a list of convictions that prevent you from applying but the link is broken and I can't view it.

I'd really just like some advice on all of this. I really want this apprenticeship but I'm worried about even applying. This is all in my past but I'm worried it won't look that way. I'd really like to hear from anyone who has been offered employment although they've had gaps in employment or any criminal convictions.

Thanks in advance if anyone replies :)

You have no chance if you do not apply, and Royal Mail is an accredited business with MIND and has managers undergo training with MHFA (Mental Health First Aid), so I would say apply for it.

However, with a criminal record, it could be difficult to pass the security checks if they are the same as for Postal Workers (I think they probably are). But it does depend on the nature of the crime.

Theft, fraud or any "honesty" crime would probably automatically mean you would fail the checks, but a minor motoring offence probably wouldn't. One thing is certain if you don't declare them, they will take a dim view, so if you do apply, be as honest as possible.

Good luck.
