The Royal Mail sealed up a postbox in Lichfield's Lombard Street after bags of urine were repeatedly pushed inside

Bags of urine deposited in a Lichfield city centre postbox forced the Royal Mail to seal it up.

The disgusting act has occurred three times at the post box in Lombard Street, near the junction with Tamworth Street, proving “intolerable” for posties and leaving residents and businesses without the facility.


The postbox was sealed for a period of two weeks but opened last Friday (November 30) to help deal with the high volume of mail anticipated on the run up to Christmas. But if there is any repetition of the act, the postbox will be resealed.

A Lombard Street resident told the Mercury: “This postbox is well-used. Sealing it up means it will be necessary to go further into town to post our mail.

“A postie explained that it was sealed because bags of urine have been pushed inside.

“I hope that this vile practice does not spread any wider to other postboxes in the city, especially when people want to post their Christmas cards.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the postbox on Lombard Street has been out of service due to unacceptable levels of hygiene issues in the area.

“Specifically, urine in plastic bags posted into the box. We apologise to customers for this unfortunate situation.

“This has been an ongoing issue and is one which is an intolerable situation for our people to work in.

“Postmen and women should be able to work in a safe and pleasant working environment when they empty postboxes. We will continue to monitor the situation.”

The spokesman said there are no other issues at any other local postboxes and the police have been informed.
