Finishing early but then being sent back out..

Post by postslippete »

If you finish well before your time and there is extra work to do in the office (and at this time of year there always is) then there is the likelihood of being sent out to do extra work to take you up to your hours.

Problem is, managers always pick on those that are 1. easy going or 2. relatively new. They never pick on those long-timers who get away with anything short of murder or those that often do them favours by taking on extra loops of overtime or helping out by coming in early on IPS. Managers know that they are cutting their own throats by doing this because since this new agreement managers have not been out delivering as often as they were and as such, rely on those posties even more so.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

It’s just some of us are quicker/better than others. That’s not having a go, it’s a fact

You must work in a nice office if you are able to finish at 11:30 doing the job properly - that’s assuming you are. Where I work in the only ones who finish on time are runners and those who cut off at this time of year. :Boo hoo!

Nope, as I have said before on here I start on time, I don’t run, I take half my break and have the other half at the end. I’m just organised.
.......and have a pxxs easy walk, otherwise you'd struggle to get done on time let alone 2 plus hrs early. Your that 'organised' that you can prep, bag up and deliver (with trolley), and have 20 mins break, three full trays of sequenced, five trays of manual and five or six packet bags plus biggies, in 5 hrs? ........or don't you get that ammount of mail and packets on your walk. Most walks in our office, you couldn't even deliver and have 20 mins break, in that time even a runner. Just shows how equal our business is.

Mine is considered the second biggest round in the office.
Others that do it hate it.

Start 06:30
Ips completed 07:10
Completed throwing out 07:50
Packets sorted 08:10
Break till 08:30
Bag up, loads van and leave the office 09:00

3-3.5hrs to deliver depending on how busy it is.

Back to office at 12-12:30

I can leave the office at 8ish on a Saturday so can finish even earlier
Any vacancies at your office???? :pray
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Out of curiosity, how many delivery points do you have?

If you're send out again at our place nobody goes untill that person or persons has returned, which is a fair enough in my opinion.

delivery points is a bad metric to realise how long a duty is anyway. 50 large houses with long driveways is very different than 50 houses in a terraced street, not only how much walking difference there would be but mail volumes for each type would also likely be different.
If you can do a duty in 3 hours observing all h&s, then its objectively too small of a duty.

It takes others 4:15-4:45 Try telling them it’s too small

So, here's the question. How do you do it so significantly quicker? All things being equal and if everyone is doing the job as specified, unless you walk at the speed of an olympic walker?

Jpro747 wrote:You’d have to be getting back at least hour early to get sent back out at our place, they just say they haven’t had their break - thats 40 mins, sort out van, kill offs, toilet (no.2), drink, going to the corner flag, and any other time wasting exercise they can get away with. Factor in 10 min travelling time to get to the delivery destination, 10 mins back ... in the end the manager gives up as it’s just not worth the hassle. :cuppa
Can't take 40 mins break at end of delivery. Only 20, and even that is probably a bit daft given the PDA actual data simply states the return to office time and doesn't factor in any outstanding breaks!

Hate to break it to you, but that office is going to get absolutely DECIMATED in a revision in the very near future. 1 out of every 3 deliveries will be removed. Enjoy what you have now, because it certainly isn't going to last forever!

Also if the local MC is one that lost out with Network 18 then the local MC might well push all dispatches back by at least 1/2 an hour

FirstPost wrote:Does this happen at your office at all? Does this include new people? I've seen it happen to a new postie but not sure if the DOM is allowed to send new people back out?
Being new or a veteran isn't a factor on this issue. Every DO is run differently and I don't foresee this ever changing. If you have, probably a newly trained, DOM who follows all the RM rules then it is standard policy to send posties back out if there work left uncompleted such as another postie cutting off etc. Nearly all the new cover DOMs we have seen in our office spout all these rules verbatim. Meanwhile posties don't have enough paid hours to do the job and there often isn't time to take the breaks. Then you get a new DOM in saying we should all be taking our breaks before we go out. These new DOMs have usually not been a postie and have no idea.
I realise some offices have walks that are too short and that will no doubt be fixed eventually in the continual cost cutting regime. I think the situation is probably the reverse in most DO though.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

It isn't an opinion, it is a fact. If there are deliveries in your office that are regularly finishing upwards of 2 hours per day before their finishing time then the PDA actuals will flag this up outwith your comfy little office and it will be targeted. That isn't a "might be" targeted, it is a cast iron certainty that it will be. It might not be as drastic as the outline of 1 in 3 deliveries being removed, but something WILL happen and you personally can expect to be found an additional 2 hours+ work per day!
