Manx postal workers vote in favour of Christmas strike

Postal workers in the Isle of Man have voted in favour of taking strike action in the run-up to Christmas.

The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) confirmed 93% of its members had backed taking industrial action over changes to benefits and deliveries.

CWU deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger described the support for action as "unprecedented".

Isle of Man Post Office said it had a "robust contingency plan" in place.

The result of the ballot will now be sent to the CWU national executive to decide if and when strike action will be taken.

Ahead of the ballot, Mr Pullinger said the proposals represented the most "horrific" cuts to service and conditions he had ever seen.

The proposed changes include reduced pension benefits and pay for new starters, and a reduction in postal deliveries in the island.

Of the 212 workers represented by the union, 91% took part in the ballot.

Does RM run the postal service on the Isle of Man? If so why are the conditions and service being altered so drastically?

No mate. They were really closely aligned in the past, basically another part of the GPO, and their terms and conditions are or were basically the same as RMs. Obviously the manx postal service is trying to hit their staffs wages and terms. For all the moaning about RM, they still have pretty decent wages and conditions but the next few years will be the real fight for the future, or it will become a casualised employer(ANGUARD COME TO MIND) with minimum wage, J(JUST LIKE RM CLEANERS). I do believe that a lot of posties will come to regret the moving on of MOYA.
