It's your brother's wedding - you're going. Just go. Do not let Royal Mail deprive you and your family of this special, [hopefully!] once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

Bang on

I had my daughter rushed into hospital after she passed out at school , she was there for 5 days and finally diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, my manager told me I could have 1 day off and the rest was either unpaid or holiday. 4 weeks later his daughter was taken into hospital with appendix , he had the whole week off full pay of course :thumbdown

I have just been reading the special leave advice for DOMs and it states that you are entitled to PAID special leave for your own wedding/registration of a civil partneership
MARRIAGE/REGISTRATION OF CIVIL PARTNERSHIP LEAVE 3 to 5 days paid leave depending on annual leave entitlement:

• 3 days if leave entitlement is 6 weeks.
• 4 days if leave entitlement is 5 weeks 3 days.
• 5 days if leave entitlement is 5 weeks.

I have tried to find the document again but now only have my local copy and upon checking it is from 2005. The current documents I can find now omit the section on days off for marriage. Sorry for misleading you, perhaps if the old agreement has not been rescinded it may still be applicable but not widely published.

edit I have found the original document online....

This - You're on a 20 hr a week contract working for Royal Mail. It's not a big loss if the DOM tries to sack you and any appeal would likely fall in your favour.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WOULDN'T BE A BIT LOSS. maybe to some it wouldn't but you get banned from benefits for SIX months if your sacked by your employer and who would employ someone who has been sacked by RM. Also the Opg might be claiming working tax allowance/universal credit due to the low number of hours worked. So his family would suffer greatly and might even end up at food banks. SO IT COULD AND PROBABLY WOULD BE A BIG LOSS. :thumbdown

postiewhite wrote:My brother is getting married on the 4th January and because of the location (200 miles from home) I will need 2 days off but have been told by my manager that there are too many off that week and its not going to be possible, we live in Nottingham and the wedding is in Bournmouth. I'm only on a 20hr PT contract and get 2 days off anyway although I usually work full time hrs. My Manager says that he "might" be able to give me the wedding day off but to speak to him nearer the time but the day after is unlikely. That is no where near a guarantee for me. It doesnt seem to me that he is even willing to let me have them as my days off which would be better instead of booking time off. Any other path I can go through or do I just have to hope and prey I get at least just one day off which means id have to go home before the night do and accept it might not even happen for me?!

And There it is!

You work full time hours because? Manager coaxed you into it gradually and now it's stuck? So you've looked after Royal Mail by covering hours but.... they don't pay you FT annual leave or sick pay, you don't get rotational days off, have they reviewed your hours to give you a FT contract? But what you do get is shafted if you need something.

I take it you were only expecting around 20 hours of pay a week? Can you afford to live on 20 hours for a few weeks? If so, tell him you cannae do anywhere near the amount of overtime you've been doing for the next few weeks.... Then put in your holiday request. If he appreciates you he will work round it, otherwise he is banking on you being their full time to save his bacon (bonus).
