Will it ever become mandatory to drive for Royal Mail?

Post by Seymour Buts »

This annoys me, there's people in my office who have simply refused to take the test: "I can't be at work that late, I don't do overtime" bla bla bla. It translates to I know as a driver there's more to do so I'm taking the easy route. Driving is a reasonable request, especially as we must be contractually obliged to do it given it's in the job title! There should be action taken against people who refuse. Obviously discounting those who were taken on before you needed to drive, that isn't their fault.

Exactly few of them in my DO have got a license but won’t drive for Royal mail just lazy if ask me .
Why risk your license driving for Royal Mail when you don't have to? I guess your loops are set up wrong if you feel you are doing extra work :d'oh!
If you feel you’re “risking” your license then you need to evaluate how you are driving
Do you have to inform your personal insurance if you have an accident in a RM van?
No, I think coz of the size of the company they self insure like much of the public sector therefore it doesn't count as a claim against you. So somebody who had a knock in our place was told anyway.

The more you drive the more likely you are to make a mistake, a brief lack of concentration is all it takes, not worth the riskI if it's not included in your contract

You only have to have a look at the state of the vans in the yard, very few without at least minor damage to them.

Do you have to inform your personal insurance if you have an accident in a RM van?

Yes you do!

Please don't give false information. You have to inform your personal insurance company.

Why would you want to take on the extra responsibility and risk to unvreasinh your own insurance if you get involved in an accident for no extra reward? I can't blame them!

They were employed to ride bikes, its not their fault its changed to vans. So why should they have to?

The only benefit I can think of, is that a driver generally gets offered more overtime due to the fact they can drive to get there.

The nature of the work has changed, letters and flats are on the decline and there's a greater increase in parcels which makes vans a better choice than bikes

Why don't RM offer those with no licence a swap duty for a mail centre job . Experience postman only those that have been in the business say over 15 years.

If they join Angard they can otherwise realistically they've no chance. It's been a good few years since we had any new non-casual or agency staff, RM seem to just replace people who leave with casuals or agency

If the business continues like this and the 'non driver's' roles become obsolete then they should be offered a driving role otherwise if unable to or refuse to then redundancy. In a perfect world, RM could make roles for them but as a private company its not in their interests.

Point I was making, was if there is no benefit or reward for them to drive then I can see their point of view.

Nonsense. Going on driving gives extra (legal) responsibility, paperwork and workload for absolutely no reward.

and to add, everytime you drive you are taking risks, all be it small ones, but these add up over time and i think eventually everyone (or at least the majority of people) will have some type of accident while driving no matter how safe their driving is, so we are taking extra risk for no reward.

Not quite "absolutely no reward."
I always say thank you when we arrive safely back at the DO.

It's far too easy to get exempted from driving on medical grounds for the business to even consider forcing non-drivers to drive or compulsory redundancy. Half the drivers in my office would fail a basic medical.
