Hi everyone, I start with Royal Mail next week. I’ve heard all the bother about getting uniforms when you start, as it’s winter will they provide new starters with storm proof coat... don’t fancy shelling out £50+ for a new coat for. Few weeks! Thanks

They will usually find an old one somewhere. However, although good at keeping the wind out they are not gooding at insulating you. I would suggest getting at least a body warmer for when it gets really cold. Once you have done a few weeks in the cold weather you'll be wearing shorts like the rest of us.

When I joined last year (mid-November) I was able to get shoes, shirts, trousers, fleece top and lightweight jacket (I ordered this myself using the uniform form I was sent and called up on the number provided - dont wait for your manager to sort it for you as other new posties at our place have waited a while to get any gear so take the initiative and order it yourself after you have finished your first day). I think I had to wait 6 weeks after my start date before I could then order the rest of the gear including the storm proof coat. We had a few old coats lying around the office though that I could use so you should be able to borrow one if needed in the meantime.

I started 3 weeks ago. All I've been given is a, pair of shoes which hurt (so I wear my own walking boots) and a hi vis vest. That's it. As a small woman no one in the depot could help much so be prepared to have your own stuff. I muddle through with my own clothes but it's that warm when you're walking (I do about 9 miles a day) you don't need much, I'm normally in a t shirt after half an hour. Can't wait to get an uniform as I'm washing and wearing every 2 days abd its ridiculous!
