The former post office workers are taking legal action against the state owned company in what has been described as one of the worst miscarriages of British justice

Hundreds of postmasters are going to court to clear their names claiming they were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting.

The former post office workers are taking legal action against the state owned company in what has been described as one of the worst miscarriages of British justice.

Many were sacked, stripped of their savings and even jailed after cash was recorded as missing at some branches, despite claims that a faulty computer system was to blame.

Now the High Court is set to rule on the compensation claims from Wednesday in a case that is expected to last until next summer.

Campaigners– who claim the final compensation bill could cost the Post Office tens of millions – have blamed the network’s Horizon software for accountancy discrepancies.

The UK’s 11,500 sub-postmasters are not directly employed by the Post Office and are forced to make up any shortfalls from their own pockets.

Mark Baker, of the Communication Workers Union, which is backing the sub-postmasters, said: “People want to clear their names within their communities. What they really want is their reputation back.”

The Post Office has disputed the claims, saying there is no evidence of a systemic software problem.

It said: “We welcome the opportunity to resolve this long-standing dispute through the courts.”
