Im all for RM making money, however i only wish to work my contracted hours, are RM going to hire extra bodies in delivery or going to pressure those of us who dont wish to do OT to do it regardless ?
Great post I’ll be with you on working my contract hours
I bet you did not say that on your job interview. All the company ask is for us to complete our walks it will take longer we will be paid for it like i say just like most other jobs in busy times.

I'd bet in the job advert it didn't state that they expect you to work beyond your contractual hours either!

Further more, have you seen the latest job ads from RM? I've seen one for 18 hours, 5 days a week and they expect you to be availble to work between 6 and 18:30. They are pathetic contracts and do not favour anyone but royal mail. They want their cake and eat it.

They will always favour Royal Mail. They pay the wages.

Don't people realize when you sign your contract it is not for life. If people hate the company so much the can leave, but they don't because they couldn't get the same wages for unskilled work.

I have worked for Royal Mail for 30 years, brought up 2 kids and paid off my mortgage with the money I have earned. People need to see the positives the company offer or leave.

The point is, you shouldn't be made to feel you have to work more than the contract your offered. And yes you can get a similar, even better wage for unskilled labour elsewhere. It's the early finish, not the wage that is the most attractive thing about this job.

Congratulations to you, pleased for you. Genuinely. Brought up two kids, paid off your mortgage?

Thirty years ago, bet this job was a lot different.

Guessing you were full time?

Try and sound so smug if you joined now, with kids on a 25 hour contract.

You have to remember that whilst in DOs your office only covers a town or part of a town (outside of rurals), MCs cover a wider area (much larger geographically after all the MC closures of recent years. Also this time of year MCs will often be doing outward mail at the same time as inward mail. Take Tracked as an example, you office might have say 500 Tracked items a day, your local MC might have 10,000 Tracked items per day passing through.

Your lorries arrive at fixed times (normally) and you the DOMs can see on the system roughly how much of each mail stream is due through. In a MC when mail is coming in from other MCs there's a lot more potential for delays to the lorries. Without the extra staff things would have to be sacrificed, possibly one could be sequencing to free up staff to sort parcels and Tracked

Exactly. The newbies are all part time now and don't get the overtime rates of time and a half of double time of S.A. at time and two thirds that we used to get. Also we got night allowance for ALL hours worked between 7pm and 6am even on overtime and driving allowance and early shift allowance. So before you talk as if everyone can raise a family on a RM wage well most of the new starts in the last 10/12 years cannot and need state help like tax credits to get bye. Yes at one time you could bring home a decent wave with loads of docket, actual and ghost flying about but not these days. So get off your high horse and before you shout about how much RM have gave you, I don't hear you shout about how much they have taken from you, like a decent pension, nda, driving allowance, phg payment, sat allowance, ect ect.

well leave then!, im on a 25hr contract to and to get the wages i currently get id have to work 40 hours in a warehouse or similar for unskilled work, Good look picking your kids up if you have to work 40 hours a week ( i know ive done it and been reprimanded for being at the clocking off machine at one minute to the hour!) at least rm is giving you the chance to a a minimum wage and look after your kids.

no, the company asked for 40/39/25 hours whatever your contract is of work per week. Theres no job and finish for either the posties benefit or RMs. Anything over and above your agreed contracted hours is at the employees discrection. Are you a manager in disguise ? a clueless one at that when it comes to basic contract law.
A well run company understands its peak business levels and brings in extra staff accordingly. Do RM managers go around in September / October checking on how many people are going to be willing to do extra hours at Xmas so they can plan their staff resources ? Ive NEVER seen it happen, its always an expectation that people will go over their agreed contracted hours, its not good enough.

Read all the comments. Its sober reading and saddening really how far things have changed. When I started in the mid 80’s Christmas was indeed looked forward to for the chance of earning extra OT. There was an agreed signed deal between the CWU (UCW then) rep and the Dom where a certain number of hours were paid on the basis that the office would clear down mail every day. Nothing was ever left on christmas eve.

Now things are different. I my opinion deliveries which in my office average 4.5 hrs of walking are long enough for a days work. Christmas mail volumes will add at least another 90 mins prob more on rurals. Getting out of the office later means working in the dark when you finish if you indeed finish.

If your lucky enough to be in your 20’s or 30’s and want the overtime then fill your boots and you will prob make about £15 a day extra. However its going to drag on at least 8 weeks and then after the big day and you return to work still half tired you have all the mailsort holiday catalogues and possible 5-6 D2D to look forward too.

I just think it’s a bit much esp if like the last few years the weather turns nasty on us. For years RM has always employed extra help at the mailcenters to handle the Christmas pressure load. Nothing at Delivery offices where the good will of the staff has been relied on to perform OT yet this is in a company where we had to vote for ind action to secure a pay deal. (rem VOTE NO on RMTV)

Christmas is a time for families and not coming home totally exhausted grumpy feeling ill and falling to sleep in a chair.

But maybe thats just me eh :Very Happy
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Utter nonsense!

You aren't paid to complete a walk. You are paid by the hour for x amount of hours per day. End of story.

If the workload exceeds the amount of hours you are paid to work then that is an issue for management to you know...... MANAGE!!!

yeah in the past it was extending a 2.5 hour walk to a 4 hr walk, nowadays its taking a 4.5 hr walk into a 6+ hour walk - no thanks !
