Postal Workers Locked out As mail arrives late

Postal Workers were this afternoon locked out after they refused to comply with instructions to deliver delayed mail to the homes today.

A rift between the management of the local postal services and postal workers erupted this afternoon when six days of mailbags were delivered by air to Gibraltar today. After the arrival of the delayed mail, and once sorted by the Sorting Office, postal workers allege to have been told to deliver the mail today. After initial refusals with claims that the demand was too much to make to the workforce, a rift erupted between management and workers which saw the workers stage a protest outside the sorting office at Line Wall.

As the workers continued their protest they were informed that they had been effectively been lock-outed, and warned that bonus for the day would not be paid, according to representatives of the workers.

Union leaders had earlier in the day indicated to the workers not to deliver the mail and continue refusing to meet the demands made on them until the next morning. However as the workers continued to stage their protest actions they were locked out of the premises at Line Wall Road, and were subsequently asked by Management, via the police to remove themselves from within the postal services property at Line Wall Road.

As the protest escalated, once again workers found themselves without the support of union leaders who were not available on the phone and could not be contacted.

Today's protest action is said to have taken place after commercial airlines have seen mail deliveries to Gibraltar delayed as they opted for other cargo. The past six days of mailbags transferred to Gibraltar today after space became available.

According to workers, there had been no knowledge prior to today that they would be called upon to deliver six days worth of mail in one day. On being instructed the delivery workers refused to comply with the demands, one stating "it is fine whilst everyone else sits sorting out the mail, or doing office jobs but it is us who have to carry the weight around Gibraltar. They cant ask us to do six days worth in one day."

Will they never learn?
Why didn't they just ask the Posties to deliver as much of the mail as possible on that day, and the rest ASAP?
Don't they realise that it's impossible to do 6 days work in just one?
