The official RM line is there are smaller versions of our standard mail pouch available and you can ask your DOM to order them for you. The idea is for you to keep a small amount of mail in the small pouch on the passenger seat. You shouldn't have any SDs on the passenger seat though.
RM deal with this one pretty strictly so you will get a meeting with a manager or DOM from another office and have the area union rep and maybe your local rep as well to defend you. The union will advise you what to say and will try to save your job. If you are a member of the union you will probably get off with having to wear a lanyard etc. If you are not a member of the union you may be in a spot of bother.

Done this, Dom is understanding and being really good about it. He mentioned getting us some of the smaller bags for this purpose!

Thanks for the replies guys! Was a moment of error and first and last time this will happen!

That's gonna take a long time on a business or rural delivery. So am I meant to go in the back of the van at each farm I get to?

That would be a reasonable argument provided the mail + foreign special was for the same delivery point. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh
Given that honesty is a basic prerequisite for the job, attempting to lie your way out of having f****d up is never the best route.
If they were prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt at first, bullshitting will put an end to that.
You know for a fact that the items shown on the front of the van were not for his next delivery point and bullshitting his way out was never in question but merely stating an honest fact.

Be great if they did the spot checks in the offices where deliveries are failing,I’d love to be stopped if I was busting a gut to do my delivery on time or any extra, and be questioned about my delivery methods and security issues, which I wouldn’t know the exact procedure after 36 years, but I’m pretty sure it will take me longer to do and complete, that’s if I don’t bring it back,I won’t get overtime cos I can make it up during the week?...

Correct! Where you go, the working bundle goes with you. It is not left unattended.

How does the manager know that for a fact that they were NOT for their next delivery point?? Did the manager in question actually grab the items off the front seat and photocopy them and keep them as evidence to use against the individual? From what I understand they didn't, so they don't have proof.

In other words its the posties WORD against that of the managers and nothing further can be done.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

If the 'post office police' have seen mail on the passenger then they will be believed and you will be in trouble. If it's your DOM or a manager doing checks I guess you will probably just get an informal warning depending on their attitudes and how they treat posties.
