Xmas Strikes

Post by che-guevara »

We will not be taking any official action before Xmas.
The ballot papers (which i have not yet received) need to give at least 30 days to reply which nicely puts us into the middle of December, 2 weeks to count & count again which gets us upto Christmas, another ballot when the no vote comes through for IA, end of January, 2 more weeks to count & count again, mid Febuary & then 7 days notice to RM before IA can start.
Looking at March before any official IA can start.

As soon as the PEC sent out its recommendation the chance of a strike over Xmas was gone. For us to strike in Jan/Feb 08 and it work we would have to go for a straight 7 days, I don't think the members have it in them. I would be there but I beleive that Hayes and Ward have now lost the momentum and due to their dithering we are FXXKED!
Crap strategy by our leadership, they must fall on their swords for recomending this.

I agree with what seems to be the majority of opinions on this issue. Striking before Christmas would be disastrous for residential customers, the very people we need on board, and most importantly our own families who will suffer finacially at Christmas time.

MAXIMUM DISTRUPTION: If we're sensible about this January/February is when huge quantities of business mail is posted.

MINIMAL IMPACT ON MEMBERS: If you pay your council tax monthly, it's paid over a 10 month period. January & February are free.

Christmas is the one time of the year when Rm are very vulnerable.
A lot of their profits come from christmas and to me it is the ideal time to strike.
Rm and the public don't care that i have lost £8000 in lump sum payment.
Adam Crozier is alright, he has taken £140,000 in leiu of his pension.
No i am sorry now is the time to think about us!
However as much as i want a no vote, as a person who was around at the time of the way forward ballot, i can tell you now it will probally be a yes vote!
Remember most postman won't even bother reading the agreement, most see the £175 and will take it.
Never mind that one day postman will be doing d2d for nothing, taking out five hour deliveries, covering for s/l a/l for nothing and losing what little o/t they have.
Well they better not coming moaning when it happens!
Our senior officals by staging the ballot over such a long period will probally get the result they want and what postman who can't see further then their nose deserve.
While Alan Leighton and Adam Crozier are sitting at home enjoying their christmas we can all contemplate a year ahead where RM edge towards a reduction in wages by 25% and increased productivity of 40%
Getting rid of d2d and o/t will help see in both objectives!
spot on :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause

RM don't give a monkeys chuff about residential customers like your aunt Sallys who post about 20 Christmas cards each year , there's no real profit to be made at Christmas infact it's a cost to RM in O/T and more to the point, what do you think your DUM has been doing the last few weeks? I'll tell you, he's been interviewing Christmas Casuals. If we're on strike you can guarentee the Chrismas casuals will be doing our work for a lot less than we would.

NO, the biggest profit comes from the big business postings, and it's January/February time that these bulk postings are sent out avdertising sales and holidays ect, ect. So if we're going to strike then January/February will be the time to do it.

public support

Post by gspot01 »

All I hear is that we need to keep the public on our side. WHY !! Can anyone tell me how many millions of our customers lobbied thier MPs to help us, how many came to be seen beside us on the picket lines, how many did anything to help our cause. IN TRUTH very few. Most were more bothered about when their giro was arriving or i posted a card a week and a half ago and its not arrived son, do you know where it is. As usual most people, posties included care about themselves and that is what we need to do now.

We need to cause mass disruption to everyone so that when it becomes inbearable, they do stand up and start shouting, not at us but at the mis-management of this company. Then we might get somewhere. Right now there is too much Namby Pambying around instead of fighting hard for what our families need.

VOTE NO STRIKE NOW STRIKE HARD :nana :nana :nana

Public opinion is only useful as a means of applying pressure to the Brown govt.
Whenever we go on strike our struggle will almost entirely be misrepresented in the media precisely to avoid the above.
Coverage of the first two strkes and the first week of rolling action was sparse to say the least, akin to a media blackout, few of the public were at all aware.
Striking at christmas would at least guarantee coverage, remember"all publicity is good publicity". If the opportunities are there it is up to our spokespeople and all of us to explain the true facts and counter RM and govt propaganda. Given the widespread public outcry over the Post Office closure programme we would certainly be missing a trick if we failed to capitalise on this; half the job has been done for us.

A simple message such as "We are fighting for the survival of a vital public service" might be as effective as Adams mantra " I simply want our people to work the hours that they are paid for"

Somebody's mentioned the "Harry Potter" debacle, where the union in it's "wisdom" decided not to take strike action on the Saturday the latest stupid
book in that series came out, if my memory serves me correctly, the plaudits from a grateful public were truly underwhelming.

WE GOT FECK ALL GRATITUDE.... WOT ELSE DO ANY OF US THINK THEY WILL DO...?? THEY TAKE US FOR GRANTED... It might, but then pigs might fly too.
Whatever the underlying reasons for striking, all the public see is yet another load of bone-idle government employees doing nothing much for most of thier working lives, and retiring at 60 on a big pension.
Stopping thier annual Xmas card from various distant relatives is hardly going to make them become all sympathetic to our cause.
Or is that too cynically smug?

Before the general banter sinks to insults, read it again.
I didn't say it IS a big pension, but that's what the Torygraph and the rest of the biased media like to proclaim.
Doveston, you talk sense.

I'm thinking. Can't quite work out the logic of the no xmas strike thing does'nt make sense to me. Tell me if i've got it wrong

"We can't strike at xmas cos it would piss off the public, this would mean commercial suicide'
"but the public don't pay our wages, business posters do, so although in commercial terms the publics custom is largely irrelevant we are mysteriously doomed if we upset them"
"conversely striking after xmas hits our big revenue providers has huge impact but does not mean we are commiting commercial suicide"

Sorry still can't seem to find the logic in that.

Truth is we can do exactly what we like and never will be commercialy doomed because there is no alternative service as the above argument assumes.
Of course RM and Brown don't want a strike at xmas cos they could never put a media lid on that and true we would get a lot of negative coverage but i did,nt notice a massive flood of media support for our last action. It would be naieve in the extreme to believe that delaying action till after xmas will somehow transform us into media darlings and Joe public will come running to our defence.

Lets not forget what started all this, and it was'nt outrageous pay demands, calls for a 10 hour week, 50% pension improvements, eight weeks annual holiday claims.
We did'nt start it but we have no choice but to fight
