Feeling rushed on a van share.

With our lot I can see it going something like this.....

" Hi, I'm ringing in as requested to update you on my progress"
"And?"
"Wel, there's no way I'm going yo be able to complete in time"
"How many loops have you got left?"
"2" by the time I'm due to finish"
"We haven't got anyone to cover them. You'll have finish it yourself....CLICK"
Genuine.
Or

1. They won't answer the phone.
2. They'll say "Well you took it out with you, you'll have to do it now!"

Just curious as to why we shouldn't just take it all and ring them later if that's what is instructed?

Genuine question. Every time I tell my manager I have to finish on time or by a certain time, i get the 'see how you get on' response. To which i assume means, if i cant complete then i should ring with an update as soon as possible.

The other response is a popular one in the office too, which is 'pull out' or 'thin' the mail.
This is just Management Bullshit mate. Have you ever taken it all out and suddenly discovered you were able to deliver it all in time allowed? Bet you haven't :hmmmm They may have instructed you to do it but it's not a viable solution is it? You'll have to try a new approach, perhaps along the lines of, "So you are telling me that if I phone you, and I've still got loads to do, then I should bring it back"? It's just a game they like to play, and unfortunately you've got to learn to play it as well. :arrrghhh

Sometimes a Manager may tell you to "Stream"... "Cull"...."Pull Out"..... or "Thin" the mail. If you do it it's called "Wilful Delay", and could end up costing you your job. I'm not sure what it is if a Manger suggests it? I'd suggest it's STILL "Wilful Delay". ;liar If you want to play safe you could ask them to put it in writing.... He never will and will have to choose another option. Perhaps leave Parcels behind or leave a street's worth of mail? :cuppa

Luckily so far I've only ever came extremely close to the time I've needed to finish by so I've never had to bring mail back.

So far in my RM career, I've been a yes person, work days off and take overtime. So i haven't seen the other side of management, yet... Although when I questioned about finishing on time regularly I was told it would be a bad career move.

The job is very difficult for those that only want to work their contracted hours.

You either need to be very strong willed, and very knowledgeable at how to cover your arse at every turn, or senior enough to get a duty where you rarely go over, if one exists at all.

Being someone who is willing to complete and book makes things much easier. Shouldn’t do, but it does.

Bad career move? :left:

I can just imagine a DOM saying this, through strained, slitted eyes, like they're Michael Douglas in Wall Street or Brando in the Godfather.

Bad career move! Brilliant! Looks like I'll be damaging my prospects again in an hour or SO's time then, when I step in front of the lino, tug my forelock and announce I wish to finish on time.
Sooner or later, a beat dog bites.

That's a good one Dr :Applause PMSL. I wonder how many of us consider this a career? To me it's just a job, regardless of how many years you put in. There's no kind of promotion, or training (that's worth a damn), you start as a Postie and 40 years later.... you're still a Postie. It's only our Higher Management that move in....get promotion........ make a killing......get another promotion....... take a Golden Handshake & Share options.... and then move to another company, to do the same. :cuppa
