Part timers in December

Post by neilgg »

Part timers at my office are being asked to do full time hours in December. Most will be more than happy to come in early for the cash but I'm unclear as to whether they should be given a temporary full time contract or not. My understanding is that such a contract would mean a full Christmas bonus instead of pro rata. Is this right?
Previous Christmases have just seen part timers claim the early start as overtime and get a pro rata bonus.
Thanks

No need to change contracts, those that do full time hours over the Christmas pressure period do get the full bonus. They always have

Paragraph 2 from the Royal Mail Core Business – Christmas Pay Supplement 2016 suggests that might not be the case for P/T'ers:

2. Part Time Employees.
Part time employees are entitled to the Christmas supplement on a pro rata basis. They will receive the payment pro-rata to a full time week according to their contracted hours on the date payment is made. Part-time employees that vary their contractual hours and work full-time for a two-week period during the Christmas pressure period (between Monday 28th November 2016 and Friday 23rd December 2016) will be paid the Christmas supplement in full. Note that overtime or scheduled attendance hours DO NOT contribute towards payment calculation.

All that happens is the dom goes round asking part time staff if they want to work full time over xmas. They then tell payroll which staff want to do it so it gets paid in their wages not as overtime. The names that have been put forward get the full bonus. No new contract has to be made.

The end result of the DOM going round is they (management) have to temporarily change contracted hours on PSP - contract change? You say tomato
I say tomato........

For everyone's benefit I think we should agree number one that if you don't get asked or don't ask for yourself don't assume that you will get the increase in contracted hours for the full bonus......

Depends on your current contract. It works out slightly more than just the hours as your delivery suppliment plus bonus will reflect that of a full timer.

Been doing full-time hrs at Christmas for 4/5 yrs now. Pretty sure bonus has always been pro-rata for me. Don't recall ever getting full amount.

We (part timers in my office) thought we were on full time hours, as we were starting at the same time as full timers. It turns out the goal posts were moved, and we just got paid the hours we worked. So if you worked with a full timer on a van share and finish time was meant to be 3:30 and you finished at 3:30 you got full time hours for that day. If you finished at 3:00, you got 1/2 hour less, whilst the full time still got his full pay.
Of course it didn't happen much as it is a busy time of year, but still hardly fair, and of course, pro-rata bonus.

Pro rata bonus is the biggest thing I hate about this company. "Part timers" can do the same, if not more hours than a full timer over Christmas. Everyone should get the same anyway

If you don't get the bonus your contract hasn't been changed, you're just doing overtime basically, but of a crock if you ask me!
