These stupid ideas are what you get when management listen to idiot posties who think they know a better way of doing things, they should be made accountable when it fails.

An increase in the number of parcels with barcodes and the increase in Tracked was always going to happen, these days most senders and recipients expect to be able to track their parcel

honestly the job is a joke, absolutely zero is put into quality of service, in fact they are hell bent on making even more complaints to accumulate then moan how much it costs to deal with them blaming us, upheld or not,
i've been saying for years it can't get any worse but it does, fortunately it pays well enough compared to other unskilled work, that doesn't make it right to strip some of their well-being , which they do.
something has got to give, this time last year we had them on their knees, its got considerably worse since and despite several walk-outs of d/o our union bosses keep them isolated and deal with them individually where they need to be acting as a union, us all

presumably the dom is ultimately responsible for our h&s but it's common sense that the regular on the duty lapsed or not should give the heads up on hazards of any kind, which in turn is a piss take has the dom demands he knows the walk better than anyone when it comes to times to completerubberbond wrote:Your comment is based on the presumption that all details on the walk are up to date ,which I guarantee you in the office I work in they certainly aren't, no walk logs of any description to be found anywhere.clashcityrocker wrote:How exactly do you acquire that knowledge if you have never done the duty before or perhaps never been in that part of town before?Celgar wrote: There will likely be very few or no bad dogs on a walk but you should acquire that knowledge.
I'll tell you.
You have dog warning stickers and dog warning cards. You then turn a letter and mark it "D" at the appropriate address or insert the dog warning card as a reminder to be extra vigilant at that address.
That is exactly the same way you ensure you don't miss D2D opt outs (except you don't mark the letter "D")
No dog warnings, no info on opt outs or special instructions of any kind on regularly lapsed walks , it's a shambles and it's certainly not alone in that.
one thing for sure, try to give warnings on hazards where possible

Naively I think I work for a FTSE top 100 company where professional managers are paid to do exactly that.
If they aren't then they need to be taken to task for failing to ensure the safety of their staff. It is a basic duty of care thing.
And along with them the reps for allowing such a shabby state of affairs to carry on unchallenged.

The only way that would happen would be to have a barcode on very last packet and have every last packet scanned. afaik part fills are being axed at some point so any given container will be scanned/logged as full even if there's only a couple of items in. It can be a pita when you're on the machine feed and you get a box with just a few letters inWhysoslowyehcfc wrote:Until they come up with a proper way to count the packets, then RM are always going to fiddle the figures to suit their needs, which means more absorption on delivery or more job cuts.

RM managers have been fiddling the figures for years, OK letters maybe dropping - but not as much as they would have you believe.
BUT packets and tracked items are rising year on year.
You only have to look at the traffic figures coming into your office to know this.
Anyone who works nights and does the sorting on the packets will back this up, there is a figure that red sleeves are supposed to contain, (around 190 -200), facts are if you have a red sleeve containing THE CHINESE PACKETS, then the figures in that red sleeve are going to be a lot more then they say.
I've sorted through plenty of red sleeves that contain THE CHINESE PACKETS and have counted 400+ plenty of times, this shows that the traffic is a lot more then RM quotes.
Until they come up with a proper way to count the packets, then RM are always going to fiddle the figures to suit their needs, which means more absorption on delivery or more job cuts.
The figures are just there for managers to somehow justify and bully posties into taking work that they don't want to, otherwise why bother with it all?? Royal Mail don't know how many packets each duty has, they are just using guesswork because they know its not possible unless each and every postie accurately counts them all on a daily basis. And we know that doesn't happen. There isn't the time nor the resources according to one senior CWU rep.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

We had a revision about 3 years ago now.
As part of the decision we had to count our parcels for each walk to get a rough idea of 'knock ons'.
So what did a lot of the office do? "I haven't got time for that" then rushed out to finish at 1pm. Many of them now complaining their walks have had too much added on to them.
Turkeys voting for Xmas at times in this job.

CWU will still plough ahead with these changes to indoor work even if they are a failure in our eyes. They have committed themselves to a 35 hour week. Cant see how we will achieve a 35 hour week without any changes to indoor delivery methods. You can only look at previous deals to see what is going to happen. (Check out how RM want new posties to be able to walk for up to six hours a day!)

The DOM might as well add 40mins worth of delivery to the walks of them runners on TuesdaysDorset Plodder wrote:Know what you mean mate.Like every Tuesday "If" the DOM says, "Time for WTLL". And the same "Runnners" start wingeing about, "I've got to get out.... I need to get finished.... I've got Specials to deliver etc" I keep telling them, "The DOM is budgeted for a 40 min WTLL session every Tuesday. If we don't have one he's just made up 40x25 minutes of Budget" TBH we should be insisiting on having a WTLL session, if for nothing else than having a Tea & a chat.
For the 35hr week to happen RM are going to have to take on a lot more staff in both MCs and DOs (don't know what the situation is like in RDCs)zz666 wrote:CWU will still plough ahead with these changes to indoor work even if they are a failure in our eyes.
