A 54-year-old who threw a cigarette on the ground at a Royal Mail depot was taken to court and ordered to pay £410 for littering.

Paul Smith, of French's Wells in Horsell , Woking , was sentenced at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (October 24) for littering at the Royal Mail Depot in Kestral Way on April 18.


He pleaded not guilty on September 19, but was found guilty the same day he was sentenced.

Smith was fined £150, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £230.

Altogether, he will have to pay £410 by November 7.

Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence for anyone to throw down, drop or deposit and then leave litter in places that are "open to the air".

This includes private land and land covered by water.
