If we get a 'no' vote, strike immediately (like the last set of 48hr strikes) it would sharpen RM's thinking and could be resolved before Christmas. Ball would be in RM's court.

we've also been told that the mandate for IA has now closed,so if the 'no' vote does come through we will have to be re- balloted. how long will all this take, could be beyond april we're still fighting for the previous april's pay rise. my guess is tha if it is a 'no' rm will simply impose things on us like they have done in the past,ie, 5.4% on pay whether you want it or not

Let's get real here - how short is the memory?

Remember the Harry Potter book saga? You know, don't call strikes on that day because you would disappoint joe public - and we didn't!

Now to get back to xmas - put your hands up all those who think the exec are going to call strikes before xmas ................. OK you can put your hand down now.

That's not at all like the Harry Potter saga, (that was one day) Christmas pressure is at least 2 weeks before Christmas Day. 2 weeks to play with

We aren't talking about the length of the action but the public perception surely. If we weren't prepared to alienate the public for one day over a book what makes you think we would do so over xmas?

Because you've got no bottle! Be prepared to be sold down the river. What makes you think it will alienate your 'customers', or are you worried about your Christmas tips: never mind the pay deal/pension.

With the current furore over Post Office closures, especially is this area, I doubt very much that the postman on the street would be the target of the publics anger if there were to be industrial action over the Christmas post period.

The public can see the service being systematically dismantled and have not, in the main, been taken in by the Royal Mail spin machine.

My reason for not striking over Christmas is strategic. If we did we would most definitely loose any support of the public. This loss would put loads of pressure on the waiverers who would start to trickle in. The press would then turn on us big time and eventually the majority of the staff, especially those with young families, would cross the picket lines and go back. Therefore, and it is only my opinion, if we did strike before Christmas we would be in a much worse position than we are now.

However, if the Union called me out over Christmas I would come out.

As would I, mate. Personally, if the timing allowed, I'd opt for a work to rule during xmas pressure, then all-out strikes from January onwards.

So your reason is strategic? OK I can go with that. But if the union called you out over Christmas you would come out. Sod the public, strategy. Sod being in a much worse position you are now.
Where are your principles, left them in care of the union?

The principle being that as we are a democratic union and I go with the majority decision. Also why the attack I am just putting my views across how about shooting down my argument with points rather than a personal attack.

I know why your name is Vulcan now - because you live on another planet.

I have been on every picket but one, every strike day, and would do so again if called. I haven't done a delivery in years so unless you want to send me a little something I won't be getting any tips because I don't have any "customers". I already draw my pension so really that is not an issue for me BUT I still consider it a bum deal for the younger element.

Forget IA at Christmas it isn't going to happen - the negotiations for pay were moved from November to April not by accident but by design.
