Sorry, but I have never understood that argument. The CWU will imho be made stronger if the vote goes against the PECs recommendation as it will show, despite press article and public opinion to the contrary, that we do not slavishly follow the unions line like 70s dinosaurs. It will however harm the reputation od the members of the PEC and will be seen as a vote of "No confidence" in Hayes and Ward. The union will survive because it depends on its membership not its leaders.

As I told one of the waverers at our office, the role of Hayes, Ward, the PEC, and all the union top brass is to act in accordance with the wishes of the membership. They can recommend acceptance of the deal, but we are not bound by their wishes. At the end of the day, each member must make up their own mind, but if a majority vote in favour of rejecting the deal, then Hayes, Ward and the PEC have to respect the democratic decision and develop new strategies based on the views of the rank-and-file membership, whose subs pay their salaries.
