From the rough detail above, I'm guessing it's not prepping mech and just delivering it?
The amount of missorts coming back daily is gonna be collassal as all I can think.
The full details haven't been released but we do know the basic idea which is they don't like sequenced mail being checked or sorted again. They are aiming to make changes that save about 25 minutes of prep time which isn't actually that much of a saving. You could compare this saving to spending up to 100 billion pounds on HS2 to save 20 minutes travel time. It's that kind of stupidity. Initial leaked reports suggest the trials of different prep methods are taking longer than our current method.
The trials are based on 90% of mail being sequenced in trays from the MC which isn't available everywhere yet. Possibly might also involve D2Ds arriving presorted in sets for each delivery point which no one has yet. One of the eight trials types involves not sorting any of the first lot of sequenced mail - just leave in the mech trays. Then sort the second lot of sequenced mail and any mail from IPS into the frame. Then you empty out the first lot of sequenced mail out on to your bench and pull the mail out of your frame and try to slide it into the correct parts of the mail on your bench. It's as fiddly, stressful, and time consuming as it sounds. The union agreed to this trial so either they knew it would be dropped or they have no idea how to be a postie.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Some MCs will never get 90% of mail sequenced and if you're including wave 2 in that then the % sequenced will go down everywhere with the amount that now goes manual on wave 2. If there has been a bulk posting through then you could well have 3 lots of sequenced (where half the wave 1 work gets run, then the batch gets run again with the rest of the work)
Postie45 wrote:Interesting, how could later start times for DO affect it ? Could everything more or less be sorted into walk order with a few hours extra time ?
Later start times for DOs in some areas could well be inevitable to allow more time for sequencing wave 2 so that it doesn't end up with most of it going manual
Postie45 wrote:Yeah that's what I kinda figured, it seems like it would give the machines more time to get to the 90% plus figure sorted into sequence.
For wave 1 later starts won't make any difference to the sequencing of the wave but for wave 2 realistically it'll be an hour later (minimum) to get the % sequenced on wave 2 to at least 90%. It'll probably mean that in MCs the sequencing of wave 2 will become an early shift duty (that is if they have got sufficient staff to sequence it)
It will not work posties always want to get finished asap if not putting in the first boxed work was better we would be doing it without the need to be told.
I have never known a company chop and change working methods so much, you would just get used to working one way then some bright spark would come up with another idea and change it all again. No doubt this new method will go through eventually, then after a while changed yet again. Ok some may say its only because people dont like change, but RM change work practices so much and Ive seen it myself over the many years I was a postie, and some of the ideas were to be honest just unbelievable, can you remember Consignia? No doubt these new methods will be designed to try and save money, but when will RM ever realise you just cannot get a square peg in a round hole.

So how / when do you check redirections / keep safes when bench merging?
“There’s nothing new about such a muddle. Petronius Arbiter, a Roman official at the time of Nero, wrote, ‘We tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion inefficiency, and demoralization.’

What about turning for packets. It will be fun looking for the right house for the packet. Plus most walks in my office don't go to frame anyway. Plus the walk I do, i do it on its own. but on a odd occasion I go out with another walk. Each scenario requires it to bagged up differently. The new method won't work.

Oh dear oh dear what a shambles, after all these ideas they will be calling it Consignia again!
