Trusted post office worker abused her position to pocket £29k

A postmaster has told of his "complete shock" at discovering a trusted employee pocketed nearly £30,000 from his post office.

The man in charge of Kibworth Post Office attended Leicester Crown Court to see Dawn Powell admit the dishonesty.


Powell (30), of Cromwell Close, Walcote, near Lutterworth, pleaded guilty to defrauding the business out of £29,500 between February 29, 2016, and September 14 last year.

She committed the fraud by reversing financial transactions when working as a clerk on the counter.

Releasing Powell on bail ahead of a sentencing hearing next month, Judge Philip Head said: "It's clearly a case that warrants imprisonment."

Afterwards, the postmaster, who asked to be named only as Mr Kharodia, told Leicestershire Live about the impact Powell's crime had had on him and his family.

He said: "We were completely shocked.


"We treated Dawn Powell like family and trusted her.

"She was in a responsible position and has let us down badly."


The married father-of-two, who has run Kibworth Post Office with his wife for three years, said: "It's had a massive impact, not just on myself, but my wife and all the family - we've had sleepless nights over it.

"It's been extremely upsetting and has destroyed our faith in human nature."

Powell's barrister, Amar Metha, told the court that her client had no previous convictions.
