As far as I understand the LAT is for lazy or disorganised people who don't prepare beforehand and order gifts etc in good time ahead of when they need it. I don't see it making a significant amount more revenue for RM. The money spent implementing LAT would be better spent increasing capacity by reworking and increasing the numbers of walks in DO etc.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

You don't understand very much then.Celgar wrote:As far as I understand the LAT is for lazy or disorganised people who don't prepare beforehand and order gifts etc in good time ahead of when they need it.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Ordering off the internet and wanting same day or next day delivery is the biggest growth area in the whole Postal Industry not just Royal Mail.
Whether it is laziness , impatience or simply that the internet allows you to shop without hassle from a range of shopping outlets from the confidence of your old home or office.
Royal Mail have just entered this market and already gone from trialing Bloom and Wilde to having River Island come on board. It is anticipated that further customers will be coming on line from October.
The pressure the union and members will come under is if as expected LAT increases than Royal Mail will want more of this work to go out with the normal deliveies as this is where they get more profit from. At present around 20% of the LAT traffic go out on stand alone duties or part duties which only deliver LAT which obviously costs more.
Royal Mail would in the future want to introduce later starts so they could ensure as much of that 20% could go out with normal deliveries where they make more revenue from. This is just another challenge we face along with Delivery Method trails , PDA actuals , AHDC , Traffic recording , Final mile Optimisation and resource scheduler all linked to a project called Project Enterprise which will allow them total visibility of hours worked indoor and outdoor against traffic and what walks could the unit could be resourced to and the resource scheduler details the duty content. This principle will also apply to Mail centres and RDCs.
This is part of a similar set of software as London Underground have.

Most interesting, Dingo - thanks for your insight.
Basically, if it takes off after trial period (which looks fairly likely), then it's entirely possibly competitors will soon realise RM have upped their game, too.

There's also going to be pressure from the knock-on affect of Network 18, where me are only just clearing now because it's the quiet time of the year, once it picks up again I reckon we'll be failing every day and some of the fails are probably going to be big. Also with the work coming in later you're going to get a much lower % of mail sequenced on wave 2, depending on when the batch that contains your walk is done. tbqf i can't see any MC sequencing wave 2 within a year, i think it'll just be walk sorted or maybe just manual, as for some batches, some nights we must be sending way over 50% manualdingo wrote:The pressure the union and members will come under is if as expected LAT increases than Royal Mail will want more of this work to go out with the normal deliveies as this is where they get more profit from. Hopefully "Project Enterprise" will make traffic forecasts more accurate, atm they're a joke, we could pick a random number and it'd probably be more accuratedingo wrote:This is just another challenge we face along with Delivery Method trails , PDA actuals , AHDC , Traffic recording , Final mile Optimisation and resource scheduler all linked to a project called Project Enterprise which will allow them total visibility of hours worked indoor and outdoor against traffic and what walks could the unit could be resourced to and the resource scheduler details the duty content. Yeah.
As someone said earlier managers are using the LAT staff as dogbodies to clear up the missed bits like leftover lapsing or missed tracked. Great way to piss off staff when your sorting the mess others are leaving.
I haven't had the misfortune of being sent out to do another walk yet as the first time they do I'll be going back to a normal shift.
No one would seriously do 2 duties In a row for a normal day.

Rumours at MC suggest the product will stop after trial period (October). Any truth in this rumour?

Doubtful, if Amazon or another really big company were to ever use it, then all DOs would have to put 1 or more proper duties in to cover it (plus however many reserves would be needed). Don't know if LAT would be enough to get Amazon to move all their postings from Yodel over to RMWild Rover wrote:Rumours at MC suggest the product will stop after trial period (October). Amazons aim is to increase their own delivery network and compete for contracts currently delivered by RM. We still get a few Amazon parcels to deliver but a small percentage of what we used to deliverSpacePhoenix wrote:Doubtful, if Amazon or another really big company were to ever use it, then all DOs would have to put 1 or more proper duties in to cover it (plus however many reserves would be needed). What you are suggesting is RM have ploughed huge resources ( my colleague got 4 hours overtime to deliver 3 packets last week) into something only to find it isn't viable and they have to drop it. We must surely be working for different companies. The RM I know and love would never be that incompetent.Wild Rover wrote:Rumours at MC suggest the product will stop after trial period (October). We still get huge amounts of Amazon stuff in my office, probably 15-20% of our workload. Several Yorks full every day. Amazon attempt to use their own drivers for a short while a couple of years ago but we soon got it all back because we're in a fairly isolated part of the country. It will be interesting to see if they expand their delivery network enough to take the work off us again.A2B wrote:Amazons aim is to increase their own delivery network and compete for contracts currently delivered by RM.
