Longer delivery spans
Nine day fortnight or even 4 day weeks. We used to have the former and it was fantastic compared to a rolling day off. Stacks more time off, however the office revised it out as they said it took too many staff to make it work ( even though an office in the same sector kept theirs and still do five yrs on). Ah to have that Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday off once a month again, not to mention the Wednesday/Thursday off week, bliss ,sheer bliss.

Sheer bliss indeed.
But there is a cost to the longer days and that is a longer delivery span.
At what point does the delivery span become untenable and what do we do to mitigate it?
The shorter the day, the shorter the delivery span.
And fewer full time jobs.
At some point (very soon) we have to decide.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

We are already at up to six hour delivery span now. Cannot go much longer than that without posties needing to use the loo so we are pretty much maxed out now. The alternative should be to increase capacity by bringing back walks that we have got rid of not so long ago. Then there would be more space and capacity for RM to deliver more parcels. Other than that happening RM cannot expand and take on any of the additional business that will come from the death of the high streets.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

A six day week would still involve planners making big walks and would include major job losses

Why not make all indoors work done by full timers, sorting, throwing all walks in, bagging all walks up.
Part timers then come in and do delivery only, 5-6 hour a day delivery whatever that may be, a 25-30 hour week.
And make sure the 'break' is organised into mid-delivery allowing people time to rest before the second half.

er, no, full time and part time both do the same 5-6 hour deliveries. At the moment, most part timers in our place have to come in and bag the walks up themselves whilst the full timers on HCT's are already out deliveringnumber one wrote:Yeah lets shaft the part timers and walk them into the groud with bigger deliveries than full timersmailroyaly wrote:Why not make all indoors work done by full timers, sorting, throwing all walks in, bagging all walks up.

or the van shares are whinging 'where's my part time partner!' . This way part timers turn up & everybody is ready to go at the same time, in theory.
I am a part timer myself & i would love to turn up and get straight on delivery without having to throw a walk in.

with my knee no way im gonna be able to do 5-6 hours my dr would agree too, is this a simple case of IHR being offered if no other suitable jobs are available ? Id be happy enough to take it at this point too.
